CERRO GORDO – Lula Graham, 66, died Monday, July 10, 2006, at her residence.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Kevin Bellamy officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Moriah Memorial Gardens in Chadbourn. Viewing will be held at People’s Funeral Home of Whiteville Friday from noon until 8 p.m. and Saturday, from 10-11 a.m. and at the church after the service. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

RUBY E. ESWORTHY

COLUMBIA Md. – Ruby Ellis Esworthy, 71, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia Md. She was the widow of the late Robert Lee “Boze” Esworthy Jr.

She was born October 2, 1934, the daughter of the late Leon W. and Emma Jane Batten Ellis of Whiteville. She was a retired occupational therapist associate for Springfield State Hospital in Sykesville. She enjoyed ceramics and doll making.

Final rites will be held Thursday, July 13, at 4 p.m. at Mt. Airy Bible Church, in Mt. Airy, with Rev. H. Wallace Webster officiating. Interment will be in Morgan Chapel U.M. Church Cemetery, Woodbine. Burrier-Queen Funeral Home of Winfield Md. is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include one son, Thomas R. Esworthy; two daughters, Rena Gayle Russell, Ellicott City and Joyce F. Kubu, Damascus; two brothers, William Ellis, Dunn and Jack Ellis, Whiteville; two sisters, Joyce Harrelson, Whiteville and the late Martha Boren; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

LAKE WACCAMAW –Annie Christine Dudley, 94, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites were held Wednesday, July 12, at Union Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald Campbell officiating. Burial followed in Cutler Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Rebecca Hildebrand, San Antonio, Texas, Jackie White, Whiteville and Brenda Benson, Lake Waccamaw and a sister, Marceline Peggues, Philadelphia, Pa.

JANNIE HOWARD

DURHAM – Jannie Howard, 95, formerly of Hallsboro, died Friday, July 7, 2006 at her home in Durham. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 14, at New Light Missionary Baptist Church in Hallsboro with Rev. Thurman Chestnutt officiating. Viewing will be at Peoples Funeral Home Thursday from noon until 8 p.m.; Friday from 9 a.m. until noon; at the church Friday from 1-2 p.m.; and after the service. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include six grandchildren.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Lisa and Maurice Spears, 1883 Old Wilmington Road in Whiteville.

MARIAN G. LONG
A mother sent from heaven

CLARENDON – Marian Gray Long, 81, of the Mollie Community went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 9, 2006 at her home surrounded by family. She was born February 25, 1925, the last of the children of the late John and Maggie Pridgen Lashley. She was a member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church and the wife of Leon Long of Clarendon. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was dearly loved and will be missed.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in the Mollie Community with Rev. Wayne Faulk officiating. Interment followed at Gore Cemetery in Clarendon. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Leon Long; two sons, Billy Long and Bobby Long and wife Daphney; one daughter, Leona Smith and husband Rev. Jerome; five grandchildren, Stephanie Sellers and husband Adam, Ashley Long, Leanna Smith, Hannah Smith, Andrew Smith and a special friend and caregiver, Erie Smith.

RIEGELWOOD – Wade Allison Bray, 75, died Monday, July 10, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born August 9, 1930 the son of the late John and Mary Bowen Bray. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years and was a member and associate minister of Pleasant Union Missionary Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 14, at Graham Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Riegelwood. Burial will follow in Graham Chapel Cemetery. Dunn Funeral Home of Burgaw is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include, his wife, Mary Robinson Bray of the home; one daughter, Sheri N. Bray; one son Wade. L. Bray all of Riegelwood; five granddaughters and one great-great granddaughter.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 13, from 6-8 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home, Burgaw.

PEGGY R.A.GILLESPIE

ELIZABETHTOWN – Peggy Rae Atteberry Gillespie, 80, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at Elizabethtown Nursing Home. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Singletary Gillespie and a daughter, Donna Katherine Gillespie.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Bladen Funeral Home with Reverends David Elks and Jerry Green officiating. Burial will follow at Singletary United Methodist Church in Dublin.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha Gillespie Schultz, Elizabethtown and Melanie Gillespie Fogleman, Wilmington; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Elizabethtown Baptist Church, or charity of ones choice.

CLINTON – Catherine Henson, 55, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Sampson Regional Hospital.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 15, at First Baptist Church in Clinton. Rev. Clowney will deliver the eulogy and burial will be in Ceder Hill Cemetery, Newburgh, N.Y. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include one son, Raymond Troy; three daughters, Yolonda Troy, Takeya Troy and Catherine Troy; four sisters, Addie Mae Shipman, Narssia Mooney, Durtha Troy, Norvella McNair; three brothers, James Troy, Elonza Troy and Francis O. Troy.

Viewing will be held at Union Funeral Home Chapel, Friday, July 14, from 1-6 p.m. and Saturday, July 15, at First Baptist Church prior to service.

ELIZABETHTOWN – Gra-dy Leon Butler, 73, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at his residence. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Helen Hester Butler; parents, Norman and Laura Butler and a brother, Thomas Butler.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 14, at Dublin First Baptist Church with the Rev. Cameron McGill officiating. Burial will follow in Singletary United Methodist Church Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include one son, Mark Butler; two daughters, Rhonda McManus and Kim Morgan; one brother, Donald Butler; two sisters, Yvonne Cross and Joan Crenshaw; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

CHADBOURN – Mary Vancie Blackwell Williams, 88, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the widow of George Parker Williams and the daughter of the late Jepsie and Jane Nobles Blackwell.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 14, at Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Jim Skinner officiating. Interment will follow in Meares Cemetery in Fair Bluff. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Estelle W. Nobles of Kannapolis and Sarah W. Coleman, Chadbourn; a son, Eugene Williams, Newport News, Va.; three sisters, Missouri Nobles and Lucille Dyson both of Chadbourn, and Kathleen Nealey, Whiteville; a brother, Billy Blackwell, Cerro Gordo; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

LORIS, S.C. – Reba Fow-ler Rabon, 96, of the Red Bluff community, died, Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at Conway Manor following illness.

She was born Aug. 25, 1909, in Horry County, the daughter of the late P.C. Prince and Delta Fowler Prince Todd. She was a homemaker and charter member of Living Water Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Fulton Bradley Rabon; two sons, Rudolph Rabon and Boyd F. Rabon; two grandchildren, Kendall Rabon and Amy McDowell; a brother, Rev. Dayton Fowler and a sister, Mattie Causey.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 14, at Living Water Baptist Church with Rev. Lebron Crisp officiating. Burial will follow in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Whiteville. Ward Funeral Home of Loris, S.C., is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include one son, Donald Rabon and wife Barbara of Clarendon; two daughters, Ina Rabon Bullock, Longs S.C., and Jo Rabon Tyree, Loris, S.C.; a sister, Mary E. Rabon, Charlotte, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and several great-great grand-children.

BURNIS ESTON DAVIS
Veteran

WHITEVILLE – Burnis Eston Davis, 88, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at his residence. He was born in Sterlings Township, in Robeson County near Princess Ann. He was the son of the late Roger C. Davis and Beulah Walters Davis and was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Gerald Davis.

He attended Tabor City High School before joining the U.S. Marine Corps where he served honorably for 20 years. He saw action against the enemy at Tulagi and Guadalcanal with Edison’s Raiders, plus New Georgia and Guam in Korea from Pursan to the Chosin Reservoir. He served with the Marine Detachment aboard five ships; USS St. Louis, USS Chester, USS Savanah, the Gen. H.F. Hodges and USS Taledo.

He also did a tour of security guard duty with American consulates on the island of Cyprus and with the American Embassy in Terhan, Iran. He was one of the oldest living males in the First Baptist Church in Whiteville where he served on the finance committee & offering teller chairman and ushered for many years.

Mr. Davis was owner and operator of the Uptown Office Supply for many years and worked for The News Reporter office supply division.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, July 14, at First Baptist Church with Reverends Daniel M. Deaton, Kerry Peeler and Kendell Cameron Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Columbus Memorial Park. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Maggie Millican Davis of Whiteville; daughter, Nancy Davis and husband Timothy H. Mihle of Wilmington; granddaughter, Madison Mihle; two sisters, Virginia Davis Anderson of Virginia Beach, Va., Ella Lou Lovett and Geneva (Jon) Hipps both of Tabor City.

Honorary pallbearers are Bunn-Keystone Sunday school Class.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Visitation will be held from 12-12:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

DELCO – Margaret Aileen Bowen Caines, 87, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Premier Living in Lake Waccamaw.

Funeral services will be announced by McKenzie Mortuary.
