Newcomers vie for city school board post

Dr. James DiMuzio Jr. and William “Dean” Nealey are looking to unseat Whiteville City Schools Board of Education Chairman LaDeen Powell.

Powell, who has yet to file for re-election to the member-at-large seat she holds, is the longest continuously serving member of the board.

District 1 board member Carlton Prince said Wednesday that he plans to file today for a second term.

District 2 board member David Flowers, the second most senior member of the board, has not filed for his seat, which expires in December.

Powell, Flowers and any challengers have until Aug. 14 to file.

In the Columbus County Schools Board of Education race, incumbent District 4 member Dale Ward has filed to keep his spot.
Incumbent Bill Johnson has filed for the District 2 seat and newcomer Mike Waddell filed for the District 3 seat, which is being vacated by Ricky Bullard.

Bullard won the Democratic primary in May for the District 6 county commissioner seat being vacated by Kip Godwin.

Filing for the county school board ends Aug. 7.

The filing fee for the county and city board seats is $61.
