FAYETTEVILLE James Woodie High Jr., 50, formerly of Whiteville, died Friday, July 14, 2006 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was the son of James Woodie High Sr. of Whiteville and the late Nancy High.
Final rites were held Sunday, July 16 at Crystal Springs Chapel. Burial followed in the Fayetteville Memorial Cemetery. Reeves Funeral Home of Hope Mills handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Linda High of Fayetteville; three daughters, Judy Graham, Jennifer High and Amanda High, all of Fayetteville; his father, James W. High Sr. of Whiteville; two brothers, Max High and Tony High, both of Whiteville; a sister, Pam High of Whiteville; and four grandchildren.
LAKE WACCAMAW Mary Lawrence Williams, 63, passed away on July 15, 2006 at her residence. Born in Palm Beach, Fla. in 1943, she soon moved to Hapeville, Ga. (just outside of Atlanta) and grew up there. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Terrell Lawrence Sr.
Williams had a successful career in broadcast television for 20 years. The last 10 years she has successfully owned and operated Williams, Herr-mann & Lawrence Advertising. She was also very active in community and civic work, through which she was awarded The Athena Woman of the Year in 1987 from the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce.
Final rites were held Tuesday, July 18 at Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church. Jones Funeral Home of Jacksonville handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her two daughters, Katherine “Katie” Irenaea Lanier and her husband, Eric and their son, Julian of Wilmington; Anna-Marie Herrmann Inman and her husband Barry and their two sons, Jacob Terrell and Samuel Xavier of Lake Waccamaw; a brother, John Terrell Lawrence II of Douglasville, Ga.; and a cousin, Carolyn Kraus Cunningham of Delray Beach, Fla. and their respective families.
With her belief in the youth being the future of our world, she requested in lieu of flowers, that donations go to the youth programs of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church of Jacksonville, St. John’s Episcopal Church of Wilmington and Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church of Lake Waccamaw.
WHITEVILLE Robert “Pete” Sarvis, 61, died Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born in Horry County, S.C., the son of the late Robert Leon Sarvis and Lettie Fowler Sarvis.
Final rites were held Wednesday, July 19 at Inman Chapel in Tabor City, conducted by the Reverends Willard McPherson and Billy Prince. Interment followed in Twin City Memorial Gardens, Loris, S.C. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sisters, Iveydene Shelley of Whiteville; Ilene S. Vance of Ash; two brothers, Hubert Sarvis and Rev. Sterling Sarvis, both of Loris, S.C.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. James “John C.” Charles Thompson, 83, formerly of Evergreen, died Saturday, July 15, 2006 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital.

Viewing will be at the funeral home in Whiteville Friday, July 21 from noon until 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be held at the church on Saturday, July 22 from 1-2 p.m. There will be a wake Friday, July 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

THOMASVILLE -- James Earl Nobles, 39, died Saturday, July 15, 2006. He was born Aug. 13, 1966 in Columbus County, a son of Clifford Devon “Buddy” Nobles and Alice Baker.
Nobles was employed with Loflin Fabrications in Denton where he was a supervisor. He loved riding his motorcycle and his classic automobiles.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 20 at Wards’ Station Cemetery near Chadbourn. Family Funeral Care of Thomasville is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy Raye Nobles, a daughter, Alicia Marie Nobles of Lexington; a son, Chad Wayne Nobles of the home; his father and mother, Buddy and Alice Baker of Chadbourn; his maternal grandmother, Pensie Sealey of Chadbourn; a sister, Deborah Walters of Chadbourn; four brothers, Billy Devon Nobles of Lexington, Clifton D. Nobles, Charles Wayne Nobles and Randall Floyd Nobles, all of Chadbourn; and two grandchildren.
TABOR CITY Hazel Purdie Fowler, 86, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at Loris Extended Care Center in Loris, S.C. after a lengthy illness.
Fowler was the daughter of the late Elma H. Purdie of White Oak. Her former husband, Lewis A. Harrelson, preceded her in death. She had resided in Tabor City since 1948 and was very active in community affairs before her illness. She was a businesswoman, member of the nursing staff at Loris Community Hospital, local PTA president, and Cub Scout leader. Fowler was an active member of the Tabor City Baptist Church, where she formerly taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and led WMU groups.
Final rites were held Thursday, July 20 at Tabor City Baptist Church with Dr. David Coleman officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 34 years, J. Wade Fowler of Tabor City; five children, Kathryn Watson of Raleigh, Judi Mitchell of Wilmington, Bobby Harrelson of Youngsville, Sandra Wheeler of Angier, and Larry Fowler of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

NAKINA Howard Crowell Gore, 73, died Thursday, July 13, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Robert Luther Hall Gore and Nettie Vassie Gore Gore. He was a farmer and a tobacconist. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Ed Gore and two sisters, Ola Leigh Cox and Betty Jo Long.
Final rites were held Sunday, July 16 at Bethesda United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Nobles with interment following in the Bethesda Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian Fowler Gore of the home; a brother, Wilbur Guy Gore of Nakina; four sisters, Clovis Long, Agnes Stocks, Jenette Long and Nell Stocks, all of Nakina.
Pallbearers were Barry Cribb, Gerald Fowler, Edwin Stocks, Jeff Long, Arnold Long and Butch Stocks.

TABOR CITY Ralph Maurice Stanley, 49, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born Nov. 1, 1956 in Horry County, S.C., the son of Lena Blanton Stanley and the late Richard Stanley.
Stanley was a member of Seven Creeks Missionary Baptist Church. He formerly was a pipe fitter foreman with Flour-Daniels for 17 years. He also worked with Austin Industrial Company for Roche Pharmaceuticals.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 21 at Seven Creeks Missionary Baptist Church by the Reverends Mark Hughes, Glen Lane and Steve Nobles. Interment will follow in Olyphic Baptist Church Cemetery. Peacocks Chapel In The Pines is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Long Stanley; two daughters, Maggie Lauren Stanley of the home, and Jenny Marie Stanley Godwin and husband, Jamie R. of Nakina; his mother, Lena Stanley of Tabor City; three brothers, Eddie Stanley and wife Dian of Tabor City, Steve Stanley of Tabor City, and Scott Stanley of Shallotte; a sister, Wanda Thompson and husband, Rex of Tabor City; six nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Arnold Long of Nakina; sister-in-law, Kim Jenerette of Whiteville; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jenette and David Long of Nakina.

ELLENVILLE, N.Y. Patricia Ann McCray Sabb, 53, formerly of Chadbourn, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at Kingston City Hospital. She was the daughter of Orbina Frink and the late David Frink.
Memorial services will be held Friday, July 21 at 10 a.m. at Christ Ministries Baptist Church in Ellenville with Pastor Mary Gunther officiating. A memorial service will be held in Chadbourn at a later date. D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn is announcing for the family.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Funeral services were held here Wednesday afternoon for Loris, S.C. native and Hooters Chairman Robert H. Brooks, 69, who died Sunday in his home from natural causes.
Brooks was raised on a tobacco farm in the 1930s without electricity or inside plumbing and grew into a major benefactor for his hometown, Clemson University where he graduated with a dairy degree, and Coastal Carolina University in nearby Conway.
He founded Naturally Fresh Foods a major manufacturer of salad dressings in 1967 and the firm now marks more than $100 million in sales. Brooks took over as chairman of the Hooters restaurant chain in the mid 1990s, and began Hooters Air after buying Pace Airlines of Winston-Salem, N.C., in 2003.
Brooks was an avid racing fan and helped sponsor the USAR Pro-Cup series that brought high-profile racing to Myrtle Beach each year. The RBR team of Cerro Gordo resident and Black’s Tire owner Ricky Benton participates in the yearly schedule.
Brooks owned racetracks in Lakeland, Fla., Jefferson, Ga., and Hudson, plus a country club, a merchandising company, a land development firm, and was co-owner of a video production company, in addition to his restaurant, charter airline and food holdings.
Final rites were held Wednesday, July 19 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Myrtle Beach.
