TABOR CITY Tonya Lisa Shirley, 44, died Thursday, July 20, 2006 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center. She was born in Guilford County the daughter of Arnold Shirley and the late Betty Lou Turbeville Shirley.
Final rites were held Saturday, July 22, at Inman Chapel with Rev. Jerry Guyton officiating. Interment followed at Oak Dale Cemetery in Loris, S.C. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her father, Arnold Shirley and stepmother, Jean Shirley of Asheboro and two sisters, Michelle Smith of Thomasville and Melissa Ratliff of Asheboro.
WHITEVILLE Richard Allen Canty, 67, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at his home.
Final rites were held Monday, July 24, at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church with burial following in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a stepmother, Ida Mae Canty of Chadbourn; a daughter, Patricia Canty of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Alberta Canty of East Orange, N.J., and Queen Esther Bellamy of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, John Canty of Whiteville and James Canty of Charlotte; a stepsister, Mildred Jackson and a stepbrother, Benny Alderman both of Whiteville.
Friends may visit the family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Canty, 290 Twin Pines Road, Whiteville.
WHITEVILLE Hazel Irene Soles, 77, died Thursday, July 20, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the widow of Wilmer Soles and the daughter of the late Duey and Agnes Hardie Hardie.
Final rites were held Sunday, July 23, at Inman Chapel with Reverends Larry Small and Jackie Godwin officiating. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Reba Cartrette of Whiteville; two sons, Raeford Soles and Kenneth “Catfish” Soles, both of Aberdeen; three sisters, Doris Dudley, Eloise McPherson and Josephine Cartrette all of Chadbourn; two brothers, Earl Cartrette and Wesley Cartrette, both of Chadbourn; 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

NAKINA James Harold Bateman Sr., 89, died Friday, July 21, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born Jan. 17, 1917 in Rockingham County the son of the late Jesse Benjamin and Ora Gilley Bateman.
He was an industrial engineer for Dan River Mills for 48 years and a member of Main Street Methodist Church in Danville, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Dockery Bateman.
Final rites were held Sunday, July 23 at Happy Home Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. David Peterson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Peacocks Chapel in the Pines handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, James H. “Jim” Bateman Jr. of Rocky Mount, Va.; two daughters, Anne Ward of Nakina and Judy Davlin of Street Md.; three sisters, Marian Pavitt of Georgia, Louise Sawyer of Burlington and Jean Bateman of Bowling Green Ohio; three brothers, Robert Maurice Bateman of Greensboro, Jesse Benjamin Bateman of Marietta Ga., and Clive Bateman of Charlotte; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

WINNABOW -- Herbert Jack Ward, passed away Friday, July 21, 2006 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
Jack was born July 29, 1947 in Whiteville, to his loving mother, Mary Horne Ward of Whiteville who survives him. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy while stationed in Newport, R.I. aboard the USS Severn A061 where his tour of duty was in the Mediterranean. Jack was an avid N.C. State fan where he graduated with a BS degree in Textile Technology. He was employed with Burlington Industries for 26 years, Carolina Mills for five years and Waverly Mills in Laurinburg.
He loved fishing and boating and enjoyed special trips to the NASCAR races. He was past president of St. Paul’s Lions Club and the John Walker Christmas Fund, both in St. Pauls, N.C.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Cheryl Wadsworth Ward and his son and wife Drs. Carter and Melissa Ward of Wilmington.
A memorial service celebrating Jack’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 29 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

COUNCIL Obie William “Bill” Landreth Sr., 59, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at his home.
Landreth was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alma Landreth and two brothers, Johnny and Berry Landreth.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 26, at White Plains Church Cemetery with Rev. Cameron McGill officiating. Bladen Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Billy Landreth and Joseph Landreth both of Bladenboro; a daughter, Angela Clanton of Clarkton; seven brothers, Howard Harris of High Point, Steve Landreth and Robert Landreth both of Greensboro, Earl Landreth of Linden, Ronald Landreth, Danny Landreth and Thomas Landreth all of Clarkton; two sisters, Alice Hair and Mary Hair both of Linden and five grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE Sigsby Brooks Enzor Sr., 72, died Saturday, July 22, 2006. He was the son of the late Lloyd K. Enzor and Thelma Elliott Enzor. Mr. Enzor was a retired farmer and was also a fertilizer dealer for many years. He was a member of Western Prong Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 25, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Warren Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the Western Prong Cemetery. McKen-zie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Thompson Enzor of Whiteville; a daughter Debbie Enzor Willetts of Wilmington; a son, Brooks Enzor Jr. and wife Shannon of Whiteville; four grandchildren, Morgan Willetts and Jennifer Willetts both of Wilmington, and Lloyd Garrett Enzor and Logan Enzor both of Whiteville.

TABOR CITY Dortha Ann Ward, 86, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at Liberty Commons Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 5, 1919, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dock Register. She is preceded in death by her husband Levie James Ward.
Final rites were held Monday, July 24, at Inman Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. James Howard Nobles officiating. Interment followed in Ward Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

LAKE WACCAMAW Sally White Council, 94, died Sunday, July 23, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born May 24, 1912 in Columbus County the daughter of the late Lloyd and Emma Stanley White. She was the widow of the late Marvin Council.
