Whiteville trips Bladen County for district supplemental title

OLD DOCK – With Taquan McDonald and Zach Brown combining to pitch a three-hitter and strike out 13 batters, the Whiteville Optimist All-Stars topped Bladen County 10-1 for the championship of the District 2 Supplemental Baseball Tournament for 11-year-olds Friday night at Thurman Ward Memorial Field.

The Whiteville squad avenged its only loss of the tournament (a 5-4 opening round decision to Bladen County) to gain the title of the three-team, double elimination tournament.

McDonald, Brown and Seth Spivey each had two hits for Whiteville, which scored in every inning. Shaq Smith, Nick Honeycutt, Ryan Ciamillo and Adam Murrell also had hits. Thomas Hammonds drew three walks and scored three runs. Whiteville put the game away with four runs in the fifth inning.

Zack Felts had a double and a single for Bladen County and Tyler Bennett knocked a triple.

After falling to Bladen County in the opening round, Whiteville came back to post wins of 10-7 and 15-6 over Columbus County.

Bladen County had opened the tournament with a 4-0 loss to Columbus County.

Along with tying Bladen County for tournament runnerup, the Columbus County All-Stars also received the tournament Sportsmanship Trophy.
