OBITUARIES
WILLIE MAE BROWN

CHADBOURN – Willie Mae Brown, 86, died Friday, July 21, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites were held Wednesday, July 26, at First Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Alton A. Burris officiating. Burial followed at Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. S&L Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Gracie A. Brown and Mable L. Adams; a son Anthony T. Brown; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Gracie Brown, 306 South Franklin Street, Whiteville.

 

SALLY WHITE COUNCIL

LAKE WACCAMAW – Sally White Council, 94, died Sunday, July 23, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

She was born May 24, 1912 in Columbus County the daughter of the late Lloyd and Emma Ward White. She was the widow of Marvin Council, a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church and the oldest living member of RSVP. She started the Sunday Ministry for the campground at Lake Waccamaw. 

Final rites were held Wednesday, July 26 at Hallsboro Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Voght officiating. Interment followed in Pierce Cemetery. Peacock Chapel in the Pines handled the arrangements. 

Survivors include four sons, James Council, Marvin Council, Paul Council and Benny Council and wife Donna, all of Lake Waccamaw; a daughter, Betty Starling and husband Julian of Fayetteville; two sisters, Laura Edwards of Red Springs and Ruth Prince McIlwain of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

RICHARD COLEMAN SPIVEY
Veteran

WHITEVILLE – Richard Coleman Spivey, 88, died Monday, July 24, 2006 at his home.

He was born Nov. 19, 1917, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie M. Spivey of Whiteville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Frances Rivenbark Spivey and nine brothers and sisters.

Spivey was an active and devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Whiteville. He became a member in 1931 and served as elder deacon and served on numerous committees.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and served through the conflicts in the Philippines and at the end of the war was in Japan during the occupation. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Master Sergeant.

Spivey was co-founder of Whiteville Body Shop Inc., in 1952 and retired at the age of 71 as president of the business.

He spent his retirement at Ocean Isle Beach, where he loved to fish for King Mackerel. “Captain Richard” will be missed by all his fishing buddies during the King Mackerel Tournaments. He was an avid baseball fan through the years as well and enjoyed watching grandson Zach play over the years.

Final rites were held Wednesday, July 26 at First Presbyterian Church in Whiteville with the Rev. Josh Bower officiating. Burial will follow in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Spivey is survived by sons, William Michael Spivey and wife Laura of Whiteville and Richard C. Spivey Jr. of Camden N.Y.; a daughter, Jeanne Faust and husband Lee of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and grandchildren of “Daddy Richard” are Will Spivey, Susan Spivey, Zach Spivey, Jason Klara, Coleman Spivey, Christopher Spivey, Jonathan Spivey, Kayla Spivey and Ryan Spivey.;great-grandchildren are Cole and Eliza Spivey and John Coleman and Luke King; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Whiteville First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 511 North Thompson Street, Whiteville, N.C., 28472 or to a charity of one’s choice.

 

CLEVELAND MITCHELL
Mill worker

WHITEVILLE – Cleveland Mitchell, 52, died Thursday, July 20, 2006 at Columbus Regional Health-care. He was a mill worker.

Final rites will be held at noon on Saturday, July 29, at Sandy Plain Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Cleo Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Bethel Cemetery in Clarkton. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a sister, Shirley Johnson of Woodside N.Y.; two brothers, James Mitchell of Jamacia, N.Y. and Frank Mitchell of Las Vegas, Nev.

The family will receive visitors at the home of Aggie Johnson, 1841 Jenkins Road, Whiteville.

 

EULA MAE SMALL
Homemaker

WHITEVILLE – Eula Mae Small, 87, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at her home. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 29 at Mill Branch Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Anthony Gause officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a foster daughter, Anne Kelly of the home, six grandchildren.

Viewing will be held Friday, July 28 from 1-8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home Chapel and Saturday, July 29 from noon until start of service at Mill Branch Church.

 

ERNEST F. HARDEE

LORIS, S.C. – Ernest Franklin “Junior” Hardee, 75, of Highway 701 South, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at his home following illness.

Hardee was born April 13, 1931 in Loris a son of the late Ernest McLauren Hardee and Ethel Eugenia Marsh Hardee. He was a graduate of Loris High School and a self-employed auto mechanic. He was a member of Loris First Baptist Church and was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Jean Hardee and Peggy Ann Hardee.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 28 at Ward Funeral Home Chapel with Preacher Ernest “Dale” Hardee officiating. Burial will follow in the Patterson Cemetery. Ward Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Nedra Strickland Hardee of the home; five children, Lyndia H. Jones and husband R.I. “Johnny” of Wampee S.C., Dianne H. Graham and husband Randal of Loris S.C., Preacher Ernest “Dale” Hardee and wife Sheryl of Loris SC., Nancy H. Knight and husband John Wayne of Harleyville S.C., and John Franklin Hardee of the home; 11 grandchildren, Melissa Lynn Williams, Patricia Eugenia Jones and Gene David Williams, all of Wampee S.C., April Nicole Shanks of Myrtle Beach S.C., Crystal Gore-Sachdeva of Conway S.C., Elizabeth Dalaine Hardee, and Anthony Gary Hardee both of Loris S.C., Christopher Leon Knight of Charleston S.C., Richard Warren Knight and  Krista Lee Nicole Knight, both of Harleyville S.C., and Lalanni Santana Hardee of Green Sea S.C.; five great-grandchildren and two on the way, Dalana Renee Williams, Dillon Lee Williams, and Dalton Ray Williams, all of Wampee S.C., Logan Kenneth Shanks of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Lauren Nicole Register of Conway, S.C.; a brother, Kenneth M. Hardee and wife Brenda C. of Whiteville.

MARION SPENCER
BAXTER SR.

TABOR CITY – Marion Spencer Baxter Sr., 73, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

He was born in Moultrie, Ga., the son of the late Jesse Lee and Alma Everette Baxter. He had served as mayor of Tabor City for 11 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was preceded in death by a wife, Betty Jernigan Baxter and a grandson, Lemuel Spencer Baxter.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 28, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Jerome Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements. 

Survivors include his wife, Ann E. Baxter of Tabor City; two sons, M. Spencer Baxter Jr. and wife Shelia and Lee Baxter, all of Tabor City; a daughter, Amy Wright and husband Shane of Tabor City; a brother, Ralph Baxter and wife Elaine of Columbia S.C.; a sister, Betty Walters and husband A.L. of Wilmington; a stepson, Ricky White of Wake Forest; and two grandchildren, Jay Wright and Drew Wright.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 27 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

BLADENBORO – Hazel M. Masters, 79, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at Sunbridge Nursing Home.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29 at Bladen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Vernon Britt officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery in Lumberton. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a brother, Rudolph Masters and a sister, Dorothy Butler.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, July 28 at the funeral home.

RALEIGH – Christopher Shaun Stanley, 26, formerly of Tabor City died Monday, July 24, 2006 at Rex Hospital here.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 28, at Worthington Funeral Home with Rev. Curtis Nealey officiating. Interment will follow in Myrtle Green Cemetery in Tabor City. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Cathy Denene Stanley Strickland of Raleigh; father, Wayne Jacobs of Lumberton; a brother, Allen Wayne Strickland of Tabor City; a sister, Cheyenne Denene Strickland of Tabor City; maternal grandmother, Ila Pearl Watts Stanley of Tabor City; paternal grandmother, Virginia Jacobs of Lumberton.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at the funeral home.
