After one week of the filing period for the Columbus County Schools Board of Education, only two candidates have placed their names in contention.

Incumbent Dale Ward has filed to keep his District 4 seat. Newcomer Mike Waddell has filed for the District 3 seat being vacated by Ricky Bullard, who recently was elected the Democratic nominee for Columbus County Commissioner in District 6.

No one has filed for the District 2 school board seat occupied by Bill Johnson, who is expected to file for re-election.

Potential candidates have until Aug. 7 to file.

Candidates for the Whiteville City Schools Board of Education may begin filing July 10. The deadline is Aug. 14.

Terms expiring this year belong to District 1 Board Members Carlton Prince, At-Large Board member and Chairman LaDeen Powell and District 2 Board Member Dave Flowers.

Filing fee for the county and city board seats is $61.
