JUSTIN RAY DAVIS

GAITHERSBURG, Md. – SFC Justin Ray Davis, 19, died Sunday, June 25, 2006 in Afghanistan.

He was the son of Dennis Johnson, formerly of the Cedar Grove com-

munity south of Cerro Gordo and the grandson of the late H.B. and Maebell Johnson.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 8, at the Interdenominational Church of God in Gaithersburg Md. A service of Garry Rollins Funeral Home, Md. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is announcing the arrangements.

PEGGY A. GILLISPIE

ELIZABETHTOWN–Peggy Attebery Gillispie, 80, died Friday, July 1, 2006 at Elizabethtown Nursing Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha Gooden Schultz and Melanie Foleman.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bladen Funeral Home.

 

VINCE “VIDO” COKLEY

WHITEVILLE – Vince “Vido” Cokley, 27, died Thursday, June 29, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital in Loris S.C.

Final rites were held July 5 at Mt. Horeb A.M.E. Church in Evergreen with the Rev. Tony Mills officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Community Cemetery. Worley Mortuary & Cremation is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his parents, Barbara Johnson of Whiteville and Harry Cokley of Evergreen; seven brothers, Harold Cokley, Curtis Solomon, Reshod King, Jarvis McKinnon, Adam King, Keith King, and Jermaine King; seven sisters, Susan Ford, Elizabeth Parker, Tatinas Lewis, Michelle Livingston, Bridgett Canty, Suzzette Fields, and Noreen Brinson; paternal grandmother, Mary Retha Cokley and maternal grandmother, Martha Johnson.

 

EDWARD PITTMAN
Veteran

LUMBERTON – Edward Pittman, 72, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at SERMC in Lumberton.

Pittman was a veteran of the U.S. army and served in Korea.

Final rites will be held 4 p.m., Friday July 7, at Lifeline Church of God in Lumberton with the Reverends Gene P. Phillips and L.F. Hatchell officiating. Burial will follow in Floyd Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Pittman of the home; three sons, Billy Rae Pittman and wife Annie, Jerry Wayne Pittman Sr. and wife Mary Ann, and Vance Edward Pittman and wife Cindy all of Lumberton; two daughters, Terea Dean Rozier and husband Michael of Lumberton, and Sabrina Lynn Stephens and husband Dalton Jr. of Barnesville; a brother, Matthew Pittman of Lumberton; five sisters, Beatrice Thomas, Stone Mountain, Ga., Dorothy Huggins, Decateur, Ga., Lillian Faye Long, Woburn Mass., Jessie Britt and Dora Smith both of Lumberton; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday July 6, from 7 – 9 p.m. at Lifeline Church of God, Hwy 41, Lumberton.

 

WILLIAM S. FAIRCLOTH
Veteran, Carpenter

LONGS, S.C. – William Samuel Faircloth Sr., 54, died Sunday, July 2, 2006 at his home following an illness. He was the son of the late Samuel Lexington and Iva Magalene Cribb Faircloth. A brother, Doug Faircloth, preceded him in death.

Faircloth was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He was also a carpenter.

Final rites were held Wednesday, July 5, at Hardwick Funeral Home with Rev. David Robbins officiating. Burial followed at Buck Creek Cemetery. Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Tarrah Faircloth of Wilmington; two sons, Jammie Faircloth Jr. of Chadbourn and J.L. Faircloth of Knoxville, Tenn.; four daughters Iva Callihan of Whiteville, Charwin Blackwell of Chadbourn, Kathy Faircloth of Cerro Gordo and Samantha Faircloth of Whiteville; one brother, Wayne Faircloth of Leland; three sisters, Pearl F. Norton of New Jersey, Barbara Sellers of Wilmington, Trisha Sorrells of Burgaw and 12 grandchildren.

CHADBOURN – Pearl Bradford, 77, died Sunday, July 2, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare of Whiteville.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at Zion Wall Freewill Baptist Church with Elder Wendell Gore officiating. Burial will follow in Belvue Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include five sons, Sammy Davis of Mullins, S.C., Ervin Gamble, Ricky Bradford and Steve Bradford all of Chadbourn and Clarence Bradford of Lumberton;  two daughters, Mattie Kelly of Florida, Erica Gamble of the home and one sister, Jessie Smith of Chadbourn.

CHADBOURN – Danny Braddy Jr., 56, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at Premier Living in Lake Waccamaw.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at Minter’s Chapel First Born Church with Elder Leon Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Community Cemetery.

Viewing will be Saturday following the service. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include five sisters, Catherine David of Evergreen, Annie Mae McCollum of Whiteville, Sally Mae Brady of Bladenboro, Thelma Brady and Sarah Lee Brady both of Paterson N.J. and a brother, Charles Braddy of Chadbourn. Friends may visit the family at the home of Mrs. Catherine David, 366 Silver Spoon Road, Evergreen.

 

LUCY E.S. PARKER

ASH – Lucy Estelle Suggs Parker, 95, of Babson Road, Ash, formerly from the Old Dock community in Columbus County went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 4, 2006 at her home surrounded by family. She was born Oct. 4, 1910 in Columbus County, N.C. She was the last of the children of the late Charlie and Lucy Sasser Suggs and a lifetime member of Palmyra Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Arvin B. Parker of Old Dock. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was dearly loved and will be missed by her family and all who knew her. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Eugene and Dorcy Parker and a daughter in law, Inez Parker.

She is survived by two sons, Winston and wife Mary F. Parker of Greensboro and Arbie Parker of Whiteville; two daughters, Lorraine Milligan and Jack Godwin and Marjorie Milliken and husband Irvin of Ash; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; eight great-great grandsons and a special friend and caregiver, Patty Milliken.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 7 at Peacock’s Chapel in the Pines with Rev. Oscar Hullender officiating. Interment will follow in Thompson-Suggs Cemetery in Old Dock.

The family will receive friends from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 6 at Peacock’s Chapel in the Pines.

Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 10 Doctor’s Circle, Suite 4, Supply N.C. or Palmyra Baptist Church, 12753 New Britton Hwy E, Whiteville.

 

JOHNNY J. ALDERMAN

TABOR CITY – Johnny J. Alderman, 71, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City.

 

ALMA HATTIE CARTER

WHITEVILLE – Alma Hattie Carter, 86, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation Center in Elizabethtown.

She was born Dec. 10, 1919 the daughter of the late Monroe and Rosa Davis Ikner. She was the widow of the late George Levy Ward and the late Glen Carter Sr. She was a member of Cypress Creek Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, July 7 at Cypress Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Squires officiating. Interment will be in the Hosea-Simmons Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Earl Ward of Poplarville, Miss., and Jerry Ward, Green Sea, S.C.; a brother, David Ikner, Whiteville; two sisters, Louise Anderson, Marion, Va. and Brenda Anderson, Trinity; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Irene Millican, Wilmington and Minnie Stevens, Whiteville; three stepsons, Bobby Carter, Hallsboro, Morris Carter, Wilmington and Frank Carter, Wilmington; five stepchildren; fourteen step grandchildren; seven great step great grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 6 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines.

 

JAMES A. SAUNDERS
Machinist

GREENSBORO – James A. Saunders, 73, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at Moses Cone Hospital. He was the son of the late Samuel and Cynthia Blue Saunders.

Saunders was a machinist employed by Newman’s Machine and Gibb’s Machine Shop until his retirement.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 7 at a graveside service in Guilford Memorial Park. Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Hazeline Moize Saunders; two stepdaughters, Cathy Berry, Whiteville and Doris Norris, Chadbourn; two sisters, Marie Riley, Rocky Point and Doris Grimsley, Troy; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave, Greensboro N.C. 27405.

The family will receive friends, Thursday evening, July 6, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. 

 

DON LANDON BRYAN

BLADENBORO – Don Landon Bryan, 45, died Sunday, July 2, 2006.

Final rites were held Wednesday, July 5, at Bladen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Seph Lewis officiating. Burial followed in Allen Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Lewis Bryan; his father, Wilber Bryan and stepmother Shirley Bryan; four daughters, Lauren Hursey and Cristin Hursey both of Dublin, and Carmen Hursey and Davido Hall, both of Lisbon; one brother, Hugh Bryan of Bladenboro; one sister, Shelia Hinson of Tabor City and one grandchild.

CHADBOURN – LeRoy Lawrence Jr., 82, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at Duke University Medical Center.

Retired teacher 

CHADBOURN – Ruby Setzer McArthur, 90, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville. She was the daughter of the late A.V. and Nora Allison Setzer and widow of William M. McArthur. She was a native of Old Fort and a retired schoolteacher.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at Chadbourn Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Bob Link and Dr. Roger Horne officiating. Interment will follow in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda M. Hunt, Whiteville; a son, Charles W. McArthur, Chadbourn; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Chadbourn Presbyterian Church, 600 E, First Ave, Chadbourn or to a favorite charity.

 

JAMES A. SAUNDERS III
Veteran

CHADBOURN – James Arthur Saunders III, 60, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at his residence.

He was the son of the late James A. Saunders Jr. and a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He was Post Commander of District 5, Post 6064 Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1999 and 2000. He retired from DuPont as an industrial mechanic.

Survivors include a son, James A. “Jamie” Saunders IV, Rocky Point; a daughter, Sonya Christine Soles, Whiteville; his mother, Theonia Fowler Saunders, Chadbourn; a sister, Gloria S. McCabe, Columbia, Tenn.; a brother, Dickie Saunders, Chadbourn and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, July 7, at Worthington Funeral Home.

Veteran

REIGELWOOD – Robert Collins Dixon, 55, a native of Virginia died July 3, 2006 at his residence.

No formal service was held.

Survivors include five brothers.

Mill worker

CLARKTON – Harry Lee Blue, 69, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006 at Duke University Hospital in Durham.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Clarkton, with the Rev. Grant Martin officiating and Rev. Jonas Freeman delivering the eulogy. Burial will be in the Holy Bethel Cemetery in Clarkton. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements. 

Survivors include four sisters, Rev. Mary M. Smith, Joan Blue, Stella Lassiter and Evelyn Freeman.

Viewing will be held Friday, July 7, from 3-8 p.m. in the Union Funeral Home Chapel and one hour prior to the service.
