OBITUARIES

JOHNNIE LEE RAY HINSON

TABOR CITY – Johnnie Lee Ray Hinson, 91, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Shoreland Healthcare in Whiteville.

She was the widow of Bromo Hinson. Born in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late John Williams Ray and Loudella Futrell Ray.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Junior Tyler. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Juanita McPherson and husband, Richard of Oak Island, and Frances “Tommie” H. Watson of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Beulah Turbeville of Clarendon, and Lorena Cribb of Clarkton; two grandchildren, Sandra Murray and Robert L. Watson Jr., both of Winston-Salem; five great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by two grandchildren, Sherry W. Wallace and William David McPherson.

 

NATHAN W. ‘NYMPH’ SINGLETARY JR.

ELIZABETHTOWN – Nathan W. “Nymph” Singletary Jr., 78, died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown. He was the son of the late Wilbur and Elizabeth Gibson Singletary. He was predeceased by a brother, Roger Singletary, and a sister, Althea Brisson.

Final rites were held Saturday, June 10 at Tar Heel Baptist Church with the Dr. Mack Roberts officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Elma Lee Nance Singletary.

EARL D. HUGGINS
Farmer and veteran

LORIS, S.C. – Earl David Huggins, 59, of the Finklea community, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at his home following an illness. Born Sept. 16, 1946 in Raleigh he was the son of the late John Henry Huggins and Esther Marie Moore Huggins.

Huggins was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a farmer, a member of the Green Sea Baptist Church, and a loving husband and father.

Final rites were held Saturday, June 10 at Green Sea Baptist Church in Green Sea, S.C. Dr. Tom Ward and Rev. Mike Matthews officiated. Entombment followed at the Twin City Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Loris, S.C. Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Barnhill Huggins of Loris, S.C.; two sons, David Glenn Huggins and wife, Ashley of Mauldin, S.C., Cameron Earl Huggins and wife, Sabrina of Loris, S.C.; a daughter, Christel Huggins Manley and husband, Sam of Greer, S.C.; three sisters, Mary Ann Jay of Houston, Texas, Carol Dillman of Cincinnati,  Ohio, and Doris Huggins of Taylor, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.

KENNETH JARVIS GORE
Veteran

NAKINA – Kenneth Jarvis Gore, 72, died Thursday, June 8, 2006. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Joseph Lester and Blanche Emma Grice Gore.

Gore was a sergeant in the United States Army. He was a member of Seven Creeks Baptist Church, and a life long farmer. He was a member of the first graduating class at Nakina High School.

Final rites were held Sunday, June 11 at Seven Creek’s Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Hughes. Burial followed in Happy Home Baptist Church Cemetery. Peacocks Chapel In The Pines handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Elderee Gore Gore; a daughter, Melony Gore Davis and husband, Scott of Old Dock; three grandsons, Allie Gibson of Wilmington, Bailey Gibson and Seth Davis, both of Old Dock; a sister, Doris Sarvis of Columbia, S.C.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Clifton, Paul, Albert, Neil, Horace and Willard Gore; and two sisters, Lila Grey High and Edith Gore.

 

WILLIAM LONNIE FAULK
Retired from Federal Paper Board and a veteran

HOLDEN BEACH – William Lonnie Faulk, 74, formerly of Bolton, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.

He was born in Columbus County, son of Rozier and Mamie Faulk. He was preceded in death by a brother, Toney Faulk; and two sisters, Helen F. Lewis and Kathleen F. Bell.

Faulk was a lifelong resident of Bolton. After retiring as a supervisor from Federal Paper Board, he spent his remaining years at his second home at Holden Beach. He loved the beach and sitting on his porch watching the boats on the Intracoastal Waterway.

He was a member of Bolton United Methodist Church. He also served in the Korean War and was a member of VFW Post 8866 in Supply.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 11 at Bolton Methodist Church, Hwy. 211. Peacocks Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

He is survived by a special nephew that he thought of as a son, William Gary Simmons and wife, Rose of Bolton; three sisters, Minnie Simmons of Bolton, Betty Ammons of Wilmington, and Ruth Watson and husband, Bob of Castle Hayne; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Bolton United Methodist Church, c/o Ray Noble, P.O. Box 40, Bolton, N.C. 28423.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, clergy and others for all the care and compassion our loved one received in the Surgical ICU and 6th Floor North at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

 

WILLIAM E. JONES

WHITEVILLE – William Eugene Jones, 67, formerly of Winnabow, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late Jesse and Bertha Lewis Jones.

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 10 at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. Elmore Strickland officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, William Jasper Jones of Whiteville; a daughter, Jennifer Godwin of Whiteville; three brothers, Willie Jones of Thomasville, Robert Jones of Leland, and Jesse Jones of Wilmington; a sister, Letha Jones; and four grandchildren.

 

ALICE PEARL PAUL LAYTON

ELIZABETHTOWN–Alice Pearl Paul Layton, 87, died Saturday, June 10, 2006. She was born in Bladen County.

Final rites were held Monday, June 12 at Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church in Council by the Rev. Jim Bartley. Burial followed in Mt. Horeb Church Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Rev. Dr. Paul Layton of Council.

 

AMELIA L. MURPHY

CREEDMOOR – Amelia Lennon Murphy, 68, formerly of Evergreen, died Saturday, June 10, 2006 at Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

 

EDWARD WAYNE FLOYD

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Edward Wayne Floyd, 30, formerly of Evergreen died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 as a result of a motorcycle accident.

Final rites were held Sunday, June 11 in Columbus, Ga. Worley Mortuary & Cremation Service of Georgia handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his father, Eddie Nelson; 13 sisters, Irene Adams, Emma Sharp, Felicia Floyd, Cynthia Lawson, Karen Davis, Audrey Stackhouse, Helen Nelson, Nicole Nelson, Tomika Boozer, Jenette Smith, Gail Chesnutt, Mildred Mcintyre, and Shirley Smith; three brothers, Lamont Nelson, Ray Smith, and Preston Smith.

 

DR. HARRY L. RICKENBACKER

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Dr. Harry L. Rickenbacker, 63, passed away Friday, June 9, 2006, after a long struggle with Lou Gehrig’s (ALS) disease. Born on March 30, 1943 in Columbia, S.C. he was the son of Eudie Roberts White and the late Harry Lever Rickenbacker.

He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1961, Wilmington Junior College in 1963, Wilmington College (now UNC-W) in 1965, MUSC in 1969 with a BS in pharmacy and UNC School of Dentistry Chapel Hill in 1974. He practiced dentistry in Chapel Hill, Durham, Shallotte and Bladenboro, and served on the Selective Service Board of Appeals for the Eastern District of N.C. for 20 years.

He served a four year elected term to the Brunswick County Board of Education, as well as chairman of Brunswick County Republican Party in the 80’s.

He served as a member of the Board of Health in Bladen County and chairman of the First Citizens Bank Board during the 90’s, and recently served as a director for the Health Sciences Foundation at MUSC in Charleston, S.C.

For many years, he was very active in real estate and was a licensed airplane pilot and a boat captain.

A memorial service was held Sunday, June 11 at Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Little River, S.C. Lee Funeral Home of Little River/North Myrtle Beach, S.C. handled the arrangements.

Other than his mother, Eudie R. White and stepfather, Henry L. White of Wilmington, he is survived by his wife, Judy Seyle Rickenbacker of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Karen Dale and husband, Robin of Little River, S.C.; a son, Slade Rickenbacker of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother Bruce Rickenbacker and wife, Susan of Wilmington; two grandchildren, Tanner and Skylar Dale, both of Little River, S.C.; and a nephew, Hardee Rickenbacker of Wilmington.

The family wishes to especially thank all the friends at the Sport and Health Club at Kingston Plantation.

LARRY D. BLACKWELL
Farmer

CERRO GORDO – Larry Dean Blackwell, 54, died Saturday, June 10, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare in Whiteville. He was the son of the late Herman and Ethel Heigler Blackwell.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 13 at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Page officiating. Burial will follow in the Gowan Cemetery at Cerro Gordo. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Ann Caupp Blackwell of the home; a daughter, Crystal Lee Walker of Cerro Gordo; a son, Walter Dewayne Blackwell of Cerro Gordo; four sisters, Martha Goins, Glenda Funderburk, Lois Locklear, and Alma Godwin, all of Cerro Gordo; a brother, Herman Blackwell Jr. of Cerro Gordo; his aunt, Maybelle Blackwell of the home.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 Monday, June 12 at the funeral home.

 

EULA GAINER SMALLWOOD

WHITEVILLE – Eula Gainer Smallwood passed away Sunday, June 11, 2006 in Whiteville at her daughter’s home.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, O.E. “Ted” Smallwood, and her grandson, Clinton “Mike” Wright.

Smallwood was a wonderful mother who was totally dedicated to her family, and served the Lord as a Sunday school teacher in the “beginners” department as well as a Vacation Bible School teacher and coordinator for the Piedmont Baptist Association. She was in the church choir at Southeast Baptist Church and served as a Bible study teacher. She was a wonderful Christian woman and a role model to all, serving her church and family with love.

Final rites will be held in Greensboro on Wednesday, June 14 at 2 p.m. at George Brothers Funeral Service with burial to follow at Westminister Gardens. George Brothers Funeral Service of Greensboro is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her son, James Parks (Susan) of Fairfax Station, Va.; two daughters, Rev. Judith Powell of Whiteville, and Susan Travers (Richard) of Julian; a brother, Alvin Gainer of Rega, Mich.; three sisters, Thelma Smith (Smitty) of Parkersburg, W. Va., Jean Fowler (Dalof) of Vienna, W. Va., and Pauline Newell of Ramona, Calif.; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 13 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home located at 803 Greenhaven Drive, Greensboro. All other times the family will receive friends at the home of Susan & Richard Travers, 4189 Old Julian Road, Julian.

GOVERNER CHESTNUT

CHADBOURN – Governer Chestnut, 71, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 13 at Zion Wall Freewill Baptist Church in Chadbourn with Elder Frank Mason Jr. delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow the Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include Catherine; and a brother, J.C. Chestnut.

Visitation will be Monday, June 12 from 1-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:30-11 a.m. at the funeral home and at the church from noon to 1 p.m. and after the service.

Friends and family may visit the home of Deloris Chestnut, 205 Jackson St., Chadbourn.

 

GREGORY L. HARDEE
Retired custodian

CLARENDON – Gregory Lind Hardee, 49, died Sunday, June 11, 2006 at his home from an extended illness. He was the son of Claude Hardee and the late Eloise Hardee.

Chestnut was a retired custodian from Chadbourn Middle School.

Final rites are incomplete and will be announced later by Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Hardee of the home; two sons, Anthony Hardee and Timothy Hardee, both of the home; and his father, Claude Hardee.

 

MORRIS C. McCARTHY
Instructor at SCC and a veteran

LAKE WACCAMAW – Morris C. McCarthy, 59, died Sunday, June 11, 2006. He was born Nov. 20, 1946 in Ithaca, N.Y.

He was employed with Southeastern Community College as an Industrial and Safety Maintenance Instructor. He was a graduate of Ohio Technical College in Columbus, Ohio. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was an active member of the Lake Waccamaw Lions Club.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Mitchell McCarthy; a son, Sean McCarthy of Buford, Ga.; two daughters, Tara McCarthy and Ashley McCarthy, both of Duluth, Ga.; a step-daughter, Joy Thomas of Lexington, Ga.; a step-son, Mitchell Thomas of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister, Kathy Schweiger of Lawrence, Ga.; two brothers, Ernie Hall of Clarkton, Ga., and George Hall of Ithaca, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
