Whiteville Optimist set to host District 2 Coach-Pitch tourney

The Whiteville Optimist Dixie Youth Baseball League will be the host team for the 2006 District 2 Coach-Pitch (ages 8-under) Tournament, which is scheduled to run July 17-21.

Teams representing six area leagues of players ages 8 and under will compete in the event that will be played on Harritan Field at Optimist Park. The host Whiteville squad will be making its first-ever appearance in district coach-pitch play.

The winner and runnerup of the double-elimination tournament will make the long jaunt to Tryon to compete in the North Carolina Coach-Pitch Tournament.

District 2 tournament play is scheduled to begin Saturday with a 4 p.m., matchup between Bladen County American and Riegelwood. At 6, Whiteville will take on Bladen National and at 8, two-time defending champion Nakina will take the field against South Columbus.

On Sunday, there will be a 6 p.m., game between the losers of the Bladen American-Riegelwood matchup and the Whiteville -Bladen National contest. The winners of those games will meet at 8 p.m. The South Columbus and Nakina team will have byes in Sunday’s round.

The tournament will run through June 20 or 21.
