WHITEVILLE Bernice Rouse, 76, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Final rites were held Saturday, June 17 at Central Baptist Church with the Rev. David Flowers officiating. Burial followed in Stephens-Wright Cemetery in Tabor City. People Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Janie Moore, a son, Arthur Rouse of the home; and a sister, Edna Williams all of Whiteville.
ELIZABETHTOWN-Larry Lee Ross, 52, died Thursday, June 15, 2006 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
WHITEVILLE William “Bill” Gordon Britt, 58, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at his residence. Preceded in death by his father, N.L. Britt.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 20 at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. David van Dooren officiating.
Survivors include his mother, Sara Prevatte van Dooren of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Whiteville; two half-brothers, Neil Mac Britt of Fayetteville, and David van Dooren of Chicago, Ill.; and a half-sister, Elizabeth van Dooren of Alexandria, Va.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
FAYETTEVILLE Easter Bell “Gwen” Baker, 35, formerly of Chadbourn died Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at her home.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 19 at United Holy Temple Church, First Ave., Chadbourn. Elder Ronald Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Belvue Cemetery, Chadbourn. D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Denisha, Cierra, and Ashanti Baker, all of Chadbourn; her mother and father, Hazel and Arthur Baker; three sisters, Jackie Rattley, Sue Baker, and Whitney Baker, all of Chadbourn; three brothers, Arthur Baker Jr. of Morganton, Ricky Baker and Ronnie Parker, both of Chadbourn.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 21 at Savannah Temple AME Zion Church in Clarkton by the Rev. Valentine Sutton. Burial will follow in the McKeithan Cemetery in Chadbourn. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sisters, Revell Ross of Clarkton, and Loretta Swendell of Elizabethtown; three brothers, Chris Ross of Fayetteville, Purcell Ross of the home, and Anthony Ross of Elizabethtown.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Tuesday from noon until 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Wednesday from noon until 1 p.m. and again following the service.
There will be a wake Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
COUNCIL Richard U. Weathers, 77, died Saturday, June 17, 2006 at the Veterans Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Veteran and farmer
CHADBOURN Joseph William Edwards, 73, died Sunday, June 18, 2006 at Durham Veterans Medical Center. A native of Columbus County, he was the son of the late Rother and Renda Hayes Edwards.
Edwards was a retired farmer. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 21 at Ward’s Station Church of God with the Reverends Richard Thomas and Billy Gardner officiating. Interment will follow in the Mercer Cemetery with military honors. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include is his wife, Emma Lee Nobles Edwards of the home; three sons, Randy Edwards, Tim Edwards, and Mike Edwards, all of Chadbourn; a daughter, Sandra Dee Edwards Coleman of Chadbourn; three brothers, Mack Edwards, Charlie Edwards, and Kenneth Edwards, all of Chadbourn, and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Veteran and bookkeeper
WHITEVILLE Steve Harritan, 84, died Saturday, June 17, 2006 at his residence. He was born in Carnegie, Pa. Aug. 1, 1921.
He served with Patton’s 8th Army in Europe during World War II. He was a retired bookkeeper.
A private memorial service is planned by his family. Peacocks Chapel In The Pines is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Randy Harritan of Midlothia, Va., and Don Harritan of Whiteville; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
