Bill: can’t take it with you when you go

The N.C. House and now the Senate is looking to add another layer of ethics reform this session.

The House bill, now being considered in the Senate, limits personal use of campaign contributions. Heretofore, candidates could use campaign contributions for anything – sports tickets, cars, vacations, whatever. When candidates left office, they could take the cash and run. No wonder fundraising was so popular.

The bill limits how solons can spend the money they raise.

The measure is one of 10 suggestions from a House ethics reform committee appointed before the beginning of the session. After a rough patch of ethical and criminal breeches, this bill and another one passed earlier in the session have been badly needed.
