A controversial call at third. A diving catch by an opposing player with the bases loaded at a critical moment.
These will be just a couple of the “what ifs?” that West Columbus baseball players, coaches and fans will ponder as they look back on the team’s remarkable season.
There can be no “what ifs” about the quality and character of Coach Ricky Young’s 2006 Viking team, however. The team won the most games in the history of the school, going 28-4, winning three single-elimination play-off games, then defeating previously unbeaten Manteo for the Eastern Championship.
Initially after a difficult loss, it’s hard to forget the pain. But over time, the players and fans will no doubt look back with fond memories of this team, a team of champions regardless of the last game.
