OBITUARIES
EDNA F. PRIDGEN

COUNCIL – Edna Bell Flynn Pridgen, 83, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Brunswick Community Hospital in Bolivia. She was the daughter of the late Edward Flynn and Bessie Belle Blackburn.

She worked at Battens B.P. Grocery at Council for more than 10 years.

Final rites will be held Saturday, June 10 at 1 p.m. at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with burial to follow in Flynn Cemetery of Whiteville. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Robert Allen Walton of Black Lake; two daughters, Linda Williford Welty of Ocean Isle Beach, and Delores Walton Lemmons of Supply; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

 

HAZEL DURDEN SMITH

TAMPA, Fla. – Hazel Durden Smith, 79, died on Thursday, May 4, 2006. She was born May 14, 1924 in Cerro Gordo to the late Hezikiah and Annie Godwin Durden.

She was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Fipps; a sister, Grace D. Bullock; and two brothers, Bartley and Fernie Durden.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, May 9 at Hillsboro Funeral Home of Braden, Fla.

Survivors include a son, Carson Durden, and four grandchildren.

 

ROBERT JORDAN

PHILADLEPHIA, Pa. – Robert Jordan, formerly of the Dothan community of Tabor City died Sunday, June 4, 2006 in Philadelphia.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City.

 

WILBERT LEE JORDAN

TABOR CITY – Wilbert Lee Jordan, 46, of the Dothan community died Monday, June 5, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital in Loris, S.C. He was the son of the late Frank Jordan and Louminor Chatman Jordan.

Final rites will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 10 at New Light A.M.E. Church in the Dothan community with the Rev. Betty Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the New Home Cemetery in Nakina. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his children, RaShawn Capers, Lisa Capters, both of Patterson, N.J., and Shavonda Hemingway; six sisters, Linda Jordan, Reatha Jordan and Alexandra Reaves, all of Tabor City, Juanita Moore, Helen Godfrey and Isabell Jones, all of Whiteville; two brothers, Thomas Jordan and Benjamin Jordan, both of Tabor City.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 9 at the funeral home.

 

KENNETH W. ‘MOUSEY’ GORE
Veteran

TABOR CITY – Kenneth Wayne “Mousey” Gore, 65, died Sunday, June 4, 2006 at his residence. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Blease and Lizzie Strickland Gore.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy and Army.

Final rites were held Wednesday, June 7 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Smith with interment following at Myrtle Green Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Teddie Gore of Winterville, and Eddie Gore of Greenville; a daughter, Amanda Hill of Clayton; three sisters, Bonnie Wright and Kaye Grainger, both of Tabor City, and Betty Gore of North Charleston, S.C.; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Jones Street Baptist Church, 115 Jones Street, Tabor City, N.C. 28463.

 

GAIL McDANIEL

WHITEVILLE – Cynthia Gail McDaniel, 45, died Sunday, June 4, 2006. She was born June 6, 1960 in Columbus County.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 8 at Shiloh Cemetery by the Rev. Oscar Hullender. Peacocks Chapel In The Pines is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by two sons, Markus Kyle McDaniel and Jason McDaniel; a sister, Debbie Boyette of Whiteville; her mother, Ann S. Cartrette of Whiteville, and her father, Thurston C. Pierce of Greensboro.

 

JUNIUS P. JENKINS,
USN Retired

WHITEVILLE – Chief Petty Officer Junius Preston Jenkins, 69, died Monday, June 5, 2006. He was born Sept. 1, 1936 in Asheville, the son of the late Bob Roy and Esther Ingle Jenkins.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in Vietnam. After Naval

retirement, he formerly worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Wash.

Memorial service will be conducted at 12 noon Friday, June 9 at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Black Mountain. Peacocks Chapel In The Pines is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his son, Daniel A. Jenkins of Santee, Calif.; two sisters, Elizabeth “Lib” Cole of Whiteville, and Yvonne Cole of Swannanoa.

  

RICHARD DONALD MARKS
Retired from
International Paper and volunteer

RIEGELWOOD -- Richard Donald Marks passed away Monday, June 5, 2006 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Acme on April 21, 1933, the son of the late Richard C. Marks and Hilda Morris Marks.

Marks was a lifetime member of Acme Presbyterian Church. He retired from International Paper Company in 1995, and was a charter member of the Acme Delco Riegelwood Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 9 at the Acme Presbyterian Church by the Reverends Jonathan Kelly and Hannah Vaughn. Interment will follow in Delco Cemetery. Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington is handling the arrangements.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Reba Lennon Marks; a daughter, Sonia Marks Bordeaux and husband Chuck of Riegelwood; a son, Richard Donald Marks Jr. and wife Kathy of Philadelphia, Miss.; four grandchildren, Scott Bordeaux and wife Dawn, Brad Bordeaux and wife Laura, both of Riegelwood, Amanda M. Clark of Ozark, Ala., and Lindsey M. Buckner of Columbus, Miss.; four great-grandchildren, Reid and Rylan Bordeaux, and Christopher Clark and Kaitlyn Williamson; two brothers, William C. Marks and wife Clara and John A. Marks and wife Faye, both of Riegelwood; three sisters, Helen Dunn and Catherine Stowe and husband John, both of Wilmington, and Hilda Marks Babson and husband Delray of Zachary, La.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Richard Greene, Judy Greene, Jimmy Quinn, Betty Smith, Pete Yurgel, Alton Edwards, Charles Squires, Billy Long, David Moore, and David Phillips. Active pallbearers will be members of the Acme Delco Riegelwood Fire and Rescue Squad.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Friday, June 9 at Acme Presbyterian Church.

Farmer and maintenance worker at SCC

WHITEVILLE – Willie Andrew Hill, 87, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at his residence. He was a farmer and a maintenance worker at Southeastern Community College.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 10 at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Henry Jones Jr. Burial will follow in the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Hill; two daughters, Nancy L. Hill and Myrtle Martin, both of Whiteville; three sons, Oree Hill of Whiteville, Wayne Hill of Baltimore, Md., and Randy Hill of Philadelphia, Pa.; a stepson, Roger Edwards of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Catherine Smith and Mazie Bell McDaniels of Philadelphia, Pa.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Saturday following the service.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

NATHAN W. TOMPKINS

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Nathan W. Tompkins, 81, died Thursday, June 1, 2006 in Milwaukee.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 9 at the Inman Chapel with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

 

IRIS BAREFOOT BAKER
Retired school teacher/guidance counselor

TABOR CITY – Iris Jeannette Barefoot Baker, 79, died Friday, June 2, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital.

She was born June 27, 1926, the daughter of the late Henry Person Barefoot and Myrtle Thompson Barefoot of Hallsboro. Her career as a teacher/ guidance counselor, mainly in Tabor City schools, spanned 38 years.

She is survived by her husband, Bryant Haywood Baker; daughters, Jeanette Baker Bledsoe and husband John of Hartsville, S.C., and Penny Baker Turner and husband Craig of High Point; grandchildren, Jacob William Turner and wife Lindsay of Asheville, Lauren Blake Turner and Madison Elizabeth Turner, both of High Point; a brother, Joe Blake Barefoot and wife Anne of Hallsboro; a niece, Jo Anne Barefoot Biser and husband Dan of Hallsboro; a nephew, Frederick Arthur Barefoot of Durham; great-nieces Julianna Blake Biser Brookshire and husband Tim of Durham, Jennie Marie Biser of Hallsboro and Acelynn Grace Barefoot of Durham; a great-nephews, Jonathan Blair Biser of Cary and Arthur Cade Barefoot of Durham.

Also surviving is caregiver Pauline Smith. Toy poodle companion, Chick-a-Dee also survives.

Having grown up on her family homestead farm in Hallsboro, she carried high values and standards, dedicating herself to family, church, community and profession. As a seventh-grade teacher and later a high-school guidance counselor in Tabor City, she helped form and direct many young lives. Many of her former students have gone on to distinguish themselves in vast areas of service and leadership. She taught home economics during the early days of her educational career in Apex and Hallsboro. She also served as a dietician for the State of North Carolina while living in Apex and at Columbus County Hospital after returning to Hallsboro.

She faithfully served Tabor City Baptist Church as a longtime Sunday school teacher and in several other capacities.

She was a graduate of Hallsboro High School and N.C. Woman’s College in Greensboro (now UNC-Greensboro). She earned her masters degree from East Carolina University.

Iris and Bryant Baker were married for 58 years. They met in his native Apex, shortly after his return from military service in World War II.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 5, at Tabor City Baptist Church under the direction of Inman Funeral Home. Rev. David Coleman presided. Providing special music were Anne Jernigan, Leslie A. Cothern, Donna Smith, Jim Smith and Margaret Jo Willoughby. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Pallbearers were Gene Burroughs, David Dorman, Clark Dorman, Nelson Lee, Patrick Sanders and Frank Stanley.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Tabor City Baptist Church Building Fund or Benevolent Fund or to the Tabor City Rescue Squad.

HAROLD L. RAINS,
USAF Retired
Veteran, magistrate, deputy,
former sheriff and mason

BOLTON – Harold Lee Rains, 76, died Wednesday afternoon, June 7, 2006 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

He was born Jan. 12, 1930 in Sampson County, the son of the late John Duncan Rains and Emma Lee Jacobs Rains.

Rains retired as a senior master sergeant after 23 years in the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retiring from the air force, he worked with Capitol Records in Bolton and Winchester, Va.

Rains was formerly a Columbus County magistrate, and served as a deputy with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Department in administrative, detective and patrol duties. He was appointed sheriff of Columbus County in 1989. He was elected sheriff in 1990 and served through 1994.

He was a York Rite Mason, and a member of Loo Choo Lodge No. 172 on Okinawa. He was also known for his expertise with a steel guitar and his country music group, The Pony Express.

Rains was a man of great faith and integrity. His family’s hearts are in a million pieces. He was the best husband and father to his girls and they know he has gone home to be with his Lord.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lollie Mae Jacobs Rains; two daughters, Emma Jean Jacobs and husband, Sammie of Bolton, Caroline Sue Rains of Wilmington; a special nephew, Ray Goodman of Bolton; two brothers, Rex Rains and wife, Diane of Tampa, Fla., Russell Raines and wife, Mary of Clinton; a sister, Minnie Brewington of Clinton; a grandson, Sandon Jacobs and wife, Brandi of Durham; a granddaughter, Joy Rector and husband, Chris of Chadbourn; a great-grandson, Tucker Rector of Chadbourn; two great - granddaughters, Kaylee Jacobs of Durham and Bailey Rector of Chadbourn; many special nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville.

 

DALLAS W. ‘PEEWEE’ ROGERS
Employed with Alamac Knits and DOT

CHADBOURN – Dallas Wayne “PeeWee” Rogers, 56, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare in Whiteville. He was the son of the late William Robert and Maybell Williamson Rogers.

He was employed by Alamac Knits for 27 years and most recently by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10 at Worthington Funeral Home with the Reverends Ricky Donaldson and Ronald Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Rogers Family Cemetery in Chadbourn. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by a daughter, Lannee’ Rogers McKeithan of White Oak; a son, Jason Wayne Rogers of Chadbourn; three sisters, Shirley R. Oliver of Fairmont, Frances R. Gause, and Doris R. Taylor, both of Lumberton; three brothers, Robert Rogers, Tommy Gene Rogers, both of Evergreen, and Roy Rogers of Chadbourn.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
