DR. DONALD KEYSER
BUIES CREEK Dr. Donald Keyser, 83, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. He was born in Lancaster County, Va., the son of the late Bernard and Irva Keyser. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Betty Sue Bell Keyser and Allie Jane Harrington Keyser, and a brother, Stanley Keyser.
Keyser was professor emeritus of the Department of Religion and Philosophy of Campbell University. He graduated from Lively High School, Campbell Junior University, Wake Forest University, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. At the latter school, he earned a B.D. degree in preparation for pastoral ministry and a Ph.D. degree in church history in preparation for teaching ministry. Before beginning his teaching duties at Campbell, in 1959, he served pastorates in Indiana and in North Carolina (Hallsboro Baptist Church). After beginning his duties at Campbell, he continued to serve the churches in North Carolina as interim pastor and in other capacities.
When Memorial Baptist Church of Buies Creek was begun in 1968, he agreed to serve as acting pastor for 15 months (he carried on his regular teaching duties) until the church called its first pastor. When he retired from academic teaching in 1997, he was named Theologian in Residence at Memorial Baptist Church and provided a study there. Also he wrote (along with Wayne Ballard) and had published a book by the title From Jerusalem to Gaza: A Theology of the Old Testament.
Final rites were held Saturday, March 11 at Memorial Baptist Church in Buies Creek with the Rev. Dr. David Whiteman officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Gardens in Lillington. O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home of Lillington handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Keyser of Raleigh, and Philip Keyser of Waterford, Calif.; a daughter, Donna Sue Keyser Currin of Coats; a sister, Audrey Keyser of Ottoman, Va.; a stepdaughter, Julia Ann Faison-Jasinski of Clayton; eight grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

SHEILA A. McPHERSON

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. Sheila Ann McPherson, 49, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at Murrells Inlet, S.C. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late William Coy and Betty Rose Ward McPherson.
McPherson was a United States Army veteran and a graduate of Williams Township School. She served four years in the Army and was a nurse at Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg for another four years.
She had been working in the Myrtle Beach-Murrell’s Inlet areas in the construction business for the last several years and had lived in Socastee in Horry County before moving to Murrell’s Inlet in the edge of Georgetown County.
Final rites were held Saturday, March 11 at the Inman Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jackie Godwin. Interment followed in McPherson Cemetery, Chadbourn. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a brother, Rex McPherson of Chadbourn.

MARSHALL EUGENE SHEPHERD SR.

WHITEVILLE Marshall Eugene Shepherd Sr., 73, died Thursday, March 9, 2006 in Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born July 12, 1932 in Scotland County, the son of the late Willie and Vessie Griffin Shepherd. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Medlin Shepherd.
Shepherd received a B.A. degree in criminal justice from Guilford College and a Master’s degree in adult education from East Carolina University. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and an 18-year veteran of the Greensboro Police Department. He was the coordinator of the Criminal Justice Program at Southeastern Community College from 1974-1989 and B.L.E.T. instructor from 1991-2000. He was a member of the Columbus County Sheriff’s Department Auxiliary, former town manager of Chadbourn and Maiden, a member of the Whiteville Lions Club, and a member and elder of the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church.
Funeral service with military honors was conducted Saturday, March 11 at Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Reverends Richard Robinson and Vaughn Earl Hartsell. Interment followed in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacocks Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by a son, Marshall E. Shepherd Jr. and wife, Toni of Greensboro; two daughters, Vickie Pait and husband, Alan of Whiteville, and Denise Shepherd of Fayetteville; a sister, Dorothy Odom of Richmond, Va.; five granddaughters, Suzanne Shepherd, Elizabeth Grillo, Leah Pait, Nicole Shepherd, Kelly Pait; three great-grandchildren, Lilianna Grillo, Oliver Shepherd and Shane Shepherd; and fiance, Patsy Walker of Chadbourn.

JAMES FREDERICK COLLIER JR.
Veteran, owned Collier TV, Appliance and Furniture, member of Lions Club, American Legion, and worked with Habitat for Humanity
WHITEVILLE James Frederick Collier Jr., 73, died Thursday, March 9, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late James Frederick Collier Sr. and Mildred Register Collier.
Collier was from the Western Prong community and served in the United States Navy. He was the owner of Collier TV, Appliance and Furniture for more than 40 years. He was honored as a lifetime member of the Whiteville Lions Club in 1999. He was a member of the American Legion and worked with the Habitat for Humanity. Collier was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Whiteville and served as an Elder and Deacon of the church.
Final rites were held Sunday, March 12 at First Presbyterian Church in Whiteville with the Rev. Paul D. Woodall Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Collier is survived by his wife, Anna Jane Stanton Collier of Whiteville; a son, James Frederick Collier III and wife Kathy of Morristown, N.J.; a daughter, Marianna Collier Wayne and husband Greg of Wilmington; a sister, Augusta Collier Davis of Whiteville; seven grandchildren, Sara Beth, Brooks, Emily and Maggie Collier and Stanton, Gregory and Anna Wayne.
Pallbearers were Joe Cook, Joe Powell, Jerry Dyson, Norman Nobles, Billy King, Bob Eplee, Al Hackney and Gene Worthington. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Whiteville Lions Club.

CLARENDON Gladys Bennett Beck, 94, of the Mollie community, died Friday, March 10, 2006 at her residence. She was born July 22, 1911, the daughter of the late Noah Webster and Lundie Simmons Bennett of Exum. She was the widow of Charlie L. Beck.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joann Gore of Eagle River, Ala.; four brothers, Rob Bennett of Jasper, Texas; Elmer Bennett of Wilmington; Orby Lee Bennett of Exum; and Calton Bennett of Lumberton; two sisters, Ocie Britt and Lena Duncan, both of Whiteville; two sons-in-law, Harvey Mincey of Shelby, and Howard Ward of Clarendon.
She was a long time member of Sweet Home Baptist Church in the Mollie community, where she was very active in teaching Sunday school, playing the piano and volunteering her time in many other church related activities.
Final rites were held Monday, March 13 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Reverends Wayne Faulk and Anthony Fipps, with burial following in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two sons, Roscoe Beck and wife Jeanette of Clarendon, Norman Beck and wife Carol of Monks Corner, S.C.; two daughters, Dulah Belle Ward of Clarendon, and Violet Mincey of Shelby; three brothers, Dayton Bennett of Fayetteville, Prince Bennett of Buna, Texas, and Graham Bennett of Jasper, Texas; a sister, Glenn Blackmon of Whiteville; a son-in-law, Elroy Gore of Eagle River, Ala.; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

TABOR CITY Rev. Grover Faulk, 83, died Thursday, March 9, 2006 in Liberty Commons Nursing Home in Whiteville. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Cary and Smithie Lee Norris Faulk.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
Final rites were held Sunday, March 12 at Sandy Plain Baptist Church, conducted by the Reverends Billy Prince and Wendell Ray. Interment followed in the Sandy Plain Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Beulah Ward Faulk of Tabor City; two daughters, Nancy King and husband Ottis of Teachey, and Dian Jolly and husband Stacy of Cayce, S.C.; four grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

BLADENBORO Louise Britt, 79, died Friday, March 10, 2006 at Woodhaven in Lumberton. She was the widow of Luther Thomas Britt.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 13 at Butters Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Singletary Cemetery in Butters. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Dennis Britt of Bladenboro; and three grandchildren.
MILDRED BYRNE TIDDY AVERETTE
CARY -- Mildred B. Tiddy Averette, 94, died Thursday, March 9, 2006. She was the daughter of Lula Spivey Byrne and James Locke Byrne, born in Whiteville on March 30, 1911.
Averette was a charter member of Western Blvd. Presbyterian Church and retired in 1974 after 31 years with the N.C. Agricultural Extension at N.C. State University. She lived in Raleigh for more than 50 years before moving to Glenaire in 1994.
A memorial service was held Sunday, March 12 at Glenaire in Cary. A graveside service was held Monday, March 13 at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Betty Connette officiated. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home of Cary handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Sally A. Meeks of Boonville; one stepson, Paul Averette of Brevard; five step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and numerous devoted cousins and faithful friends. She was preceded in death by two loving husbands, J. Edwin Tiddy and Henry Paul Averette.

WHITE OAK Roy William Tessoni, 76, died Thursday, March 9, 2006 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington. He was born in Queens, N.Y.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 13 conducted by Father James P. Byrne at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery at Tar Heel. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Michael Tessoni of Memphis, Tenn.; and a daughter, Doreen Agulla of Florida.
LAKE WACCAMAW Ruby Dell Taylor Long, 90, of Premier Living, formerly of Ash died Wednesday, March 8, 2006.
Final rites were held Sunday, March 12 at Soldier Bay Baptist Church in Ash with the Reverends Charles Smith and Anthony Clemmons officiating. Interment followed in the Stevens Cemetery in Nakina. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Wayne Long of Ash, and Marvin Terry Long of Nakina; two daughters, Mary Jane Evers of Lake Waccamaw, and Carrie Ann Tripp of Ash; two brothers, J.D. Taylor of Evergreen, Ala., and John Rufus “Buddy” Taylor of Crestview, Fla.; three sisters, Frances Hicks of Alabama, Annie Sue Rabren of Evergreen, Ala., and Ruth Rawls of Corpus Christi, Texas; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
CHADBOURN Dolphus J. Suggs, 79, died Thursday, March 9, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late Henry Olen and Bertha Lenora Morris Suggs and the husband of the late Mary Norris Suggs.
Final rites were held Saturday, March 11 at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Moore officiating. Interment followed in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
He is survived by a brother, Doris M. Suggs of Whiteville; a sister, Alverta Stover of Whiteville; three step-daughters, June Roberts of Georgetown, S.C., Shirley Guyton of Chadbourn, and Sherry Andrews of Whiteville; five step-sons, Clayton Norris of Calabash, Ronald Norris of Greensboro, Jimmy Norris and Kenneth Norris, both of Asheboro, and Ray Norris of Shallotte; two step-sisters, Dorothy B. Winnies of Chadbourn, Louise B. Crawford of Fuquay-Varina; a step-brother, Gordon R. Batten of Whiteville; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
