Vikings trounce
Wolfpack 12-2

CERRO GORDO – The host West Columbus Vikings put numbers on the board in every inning Friday as they stayed unbeaten with a 12-2 non-conference baseball victory over the Whiteville Wolfpack. The game was halted in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule.

West Columbus, ranked second among North Carolina 1A teams, upped its record to 5-0 behind the five-hit pitching of Daniel Britt. Britt, who struck out seven batters, also contributed a double while John David White had three hits. Shortstop Ryan McCleney went 1-for-1 and scored four Viking runs.

Britt carried a shutout to the fifth inning when he gave up a two-run homer to Whiteville’s Trey Nye. Robbie Penny added two doubles for the Wolfpack, whose season record is 1-3.

The Vikings jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 6-0 after two frames.

Zack Spivey was the starting pitcher for Whiteville. He was relieved by Nye in the third inning.

Coach Ricky Young’s West Columbus team will entertain East Columbus on Tuesday before traveling to play Whiteville in a rematch on Friday.

Coach Brett Harwood’s Whiteville squad will visit West Bladen Tuesday and entertain Clinton on Wednesday.
