ECHS, Whiteville take wins

The East Columbus Lady Gators stayed unbeaten with an 11-0 shutout of host West Columbus, and Whiteville took its second straight win with a 4-2 decision over West Bladen in Tuesday high-school softball action.

Also, South Columbus suffered its fourth straight loss in bowing to West Brunswick.

Kayla McLean went 4-for-4 with a home run and a double for East Columbus.
Erica Smith also went 4-for-4 for the Lady Gators, who put their season record at 5-0.

ECHS pitchers Jena Britt and Jessica McPherson combined to strike out nine batters. WCHS pitcher Caroline Newman struck out 10 as the Lady Vikings’ record fell to 0-6.

East Columbus had taken a 26-2 non-conference victory over Fairmont on Monday at Fairmont. Caitlin Lane had four hits while Krystal Malpass knocked a home run in the five-inning victory. Rebecca Harrelson and Hannah Proctor each drove in five runs.

Whiteville 4
West Bladen 2

Amanda Pope was the winning pitcher while Megan Storms, Nicole Storms and Olivia Williams each had two hits for the Lady Wolfpack.

Williams and Nicole Storms each had a double as Whiteville put its season record at 2-3.

West Bladen was held to four hits.

West Brunswick 5
South Columbus 2

South Columbus, which had dropped a doubleheader to East Bladen on Monday, got a triple by Courtney Long in its second heart-breaking loss to the undefeated West Brunswick team in as many weeks.

South Columbus is now 4-4.
