OBITUARIES
EMILY K. MERCER

WHITEVILLE – Emily K. Mercer, 85, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 in Sumter, S.C. She was born June 12, 1920 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Wilson and Katie Williams Kellihan. She was the widow of Gay K. Mercer.

Mercer was a member of Whiteville United Methodist Church.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 5 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. David Benson. Interment will be in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by a daughter, Anna Mercer Anderson and husband, John of Wedgefield, S.C.; three grandchildren, Anna Gaye Davis and husband, Mitch of Darlington, S.C., W. Renea Fowler and husband, Larry of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C., Marijon Procise and husband, Ted of Crewe, Va.; six great-grandchildren, John Mitchell Davis, Christopher Davis, Meghan Davis, Annadora Fowler, Kayla Procise and Kyle Procise; a sister, Miriam Edwards of Fair Bluff; her caregivers, Cora Shipman and Ernestine Dixon.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jewel Benton and Edna Bullard; three brothers, Athell Kellihan, James Kellihan and Dowe Kellihan.

Serving as pallbearers will be Marty Hilburn, Ricky Rogers, Freddie Edwards, Royce Butler, Thomas Garrell, and Bennie Kissam.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at the funeral home.

 

SHIRLEY C. GASS

LAKE WACCAMAW – Shirley Chauncey Gass, 66, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of Gray Hester Chauncey and the late Carl Thompson Chauncey.

She was a member of Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 2 at Lake Waccamaw Cemetery with the Reverends Doug B. Currin and Willard McPherson officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas L. Gass of Lake Waccamaw; a daughter, Chauntel G. Eason of Lake Waccamaw; her mother, Gray Hester Chauncey of Lake Waccamaw.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 725-A Wellington Ave., Wilmington, N.C. 28401.

 

NANCY B. JOHNSON

WALSTONBURG – Nancy Brady Johnson, 82, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006 at Britthaven of Snow Hill.

Johnson was a member of the Farmville Church of God.

Final rites were held Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Church Street Chapel of the Farmville Funeral Home by the Rev. Donald Daniels. Interment followed in Walstonburg Cemetery. Farmville Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Johnson of the home; two daughters, Lois J. McCullen of Lake Waccamaw, and Linda J. Croom of Kenly; three sons, James H. Johnson of Kenly, Bobby Johnson of Williamston, and Kenneth Johnson of Orrum; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

LEE BERTHA FREEMAN

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Lee Bertha Freeman, 48, formerly of Bolton, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Freeman and Mildred Freeman Prince of Bolton.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4 at Lee’s Chapel AME Zion Church in Bolton with Presiding Elder Florence Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwell Cemetery #1. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Michael Freeman of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Bert Medley of Washington, D.C., and Claire Freeman of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Arthur Freeman Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; her stepmother, Theresa Nazar of Alexandria, Va.; a stepsister, Heather Razor of Alexandria, Va.; two stepbrothers, Andy Beatty and Anthony Weatherall of Alexandria, Va.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday, March 3 from noon to 7 p.m. Viewing will be at the church Saturday following the service. Friends may visit the family at the home of Willie Melvin in Bolton.

 

MARGARET L. WILLIS
Employee of Bladen County Hospital

WHITEVILLE – Margaret L. Willis, 51, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

She was employed at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 2 at Mill Branch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. James Smith. Burial will follow in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Leroy Willis; two daughters, Charmaine Boone and Felicia Skinner of the home; a son, Adrian Willis of the home; a sister, Mae Elizabeth Willis of Whiteville; two brothers, James E. Jones and William Solomon Peoples, both of Whiteville.

Viewing will be at the church Thursday after the service.

 

MATTHEW J. STEPHENS
Veteran

TABOR CITY – Matthew James “M.J.” Stephens, 79, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 in Loris Extended Care.

He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Bright and Jennie Spivey Stephens. He was a veteran.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 3 at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Tabor City conducted by Dr. David Coleman. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Scace Stephens of Tabor City; a brother, Dewey Stephens of Tabor City.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 2 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

JAKE C. GODWIN
Farmer, veteran, Master Mason, and Shriner

CHADBOURN – Jake C. Godwin, 84, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital, Loris, S.C.

Godwin served in the Army Air Force from 1942-1945 as an airplane engine 747 mechanic. He was a devout Christian and an exceptional farmer all of his life. He served his Lord and church to the full extent of his strength, was a beloved husband, father, papa, great-papa, and friend, he was devoted to and very proud of his family.  Known as a good neighbor he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a Master Mason, Shriner, served on the Brunswick Electric Board of Directors and on the Farm Bureau Board of Directors.

A memorial service to celebrate Jake’s life was held Wednesday, March 1 at Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church. Interment followed at McPherson Cemetery, Chadbourn. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Dorothy “Dot” Simmons Godwin, a son, Larry Godwin of Clarendon and wife Wanda, and children, Jeff of Raleigh and wife Keel, Ab and wife Ashley, and Josh of Clarendon; a daughter, Peggy Fields and husband W. Corbett Fields of Evergreen, and children, Ann Ramey and husband Mark of Hillsborough, William Fields and wife Wendy of Raeford, Taylor Fields of Red Springs; great - grandchildren, Jacob Ramey, Kayla Ramey, Cory Fields, and Clair Fields;  a sister, Idell Mercer and husband Phil of Chadbourn; a brother, Shelt Godwin and wife Jill of Chadbourn, and sisters, Margaret Dunn and husband “Pat,” Inez McKee, and Mildred Hinson, all of Whiteville.

DELCO – Nancy Marion Blanks, 83, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
