McKoy assists NC boys team

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Whiteville High girls basketball star Shannon McCallum contributed seven points for the North Carolina All-Stars Saturday in their 61-51 victory over the South Carolina All-Stars in the 2006 Carolinas Classic at Winthrop University Coliseum.

McCallum, a three-time all-stater at WHS who has signed to play at the University of South Carolina, scored five of her points in the first half when the North Carolina squad built a 36-19 lead.

Mekia Valentine of Greensboro Dudley led N.C. scorers with 13 points, followed by South Mecklenburg’s Joy Cheek with 10. Farmville Central’s Megan Zullo added eight points to the North Carolina effort.

Zullo helped pace Farmville Central to an overtime victory over the McCallum-led Whiteville High squad in the Eastern N.C. 2A regional finals on Feb. 25 for Whiteville’s only loss of the year. Farmville Central defeated Salisbury in overtime for the state championship the following weekend.

The N.C. girls all-stars were coached by John Rawls of Ledford and Scott Campbell of Apex.

Whiteville High veteran boys coach Glenn McKoy, who stepped down at the end of this past season after 27 years and 536 victories with the Wolfpack, served as an assistant coach for the N.C. boys all-stars, who fell to South Carolina 121-98.

The North Carolina boys team, whose head coach was Doug Plemmons of Franklin, got a game-high 30 points by William Graves of Greensboro Dudley.
