TINA C. HELMS

BLADENBORO – Tina Cloyne Helms, 38, died Monday, March 20, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 23 at Bladen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Skinner officiating. Burial will follow in Clarkton City Cemetery. Gaskins Funeral Home of Clarkton is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Joey Helms; two sons, Tony Norris and Robert Norris, both of the home; a daughter, Billie Jo Norris of the home; her mother, Isabelle Weatherford; her father, Bill Cloyne and step-mother, Patricia Cloyne; two brothers, Mike Cloyne of Wilmington, and Todd Cloyne of Michigan.

 

ORINE S. CRAWFORD

DELCO – Orine S. Crawford, 76, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006 in Autumn Care in Shallotte. She was born Nov. 26, 1929 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Cecil and Jessie Edge Shelley. She was the widow of Charles B. Crawford.

She was a member of Sunset Harbor Baptist Church and formerly employed with Pierce-Wyche Co. in Delco.

Final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 24 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. Martin Benton. Interment will follow in the Delco Cemetery. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by three sons, Alan Crawford and Jeff Crawford, both of Delco; and Freddy Crawford of Sunset Harbor; four sisters, Selena S. Floyd of Mullins, S.C., Rachel S. Dodson of Cape Canaveral, Fla., Joann S. Johnson of Rockledge, Fla., and Elizabeth S. Henry of Charlotte; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 23 at the funeral home.

ALENE JOHNSON

TABOR CITY – Alene Johnson died Monday, March 20, 2006 at the Loris Community Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City.

 

CLAUDE A. HOOD
Forester and veteran

ELIZABETHTOWN – Claude Adams Hood, 72, died Sunday, March 19, 2006 at his residence. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. on March 3, 1934.

After graduating from Frederick High School in Fredrick, Md. in 1952, he went on to North Carolina State University where he received his forestry degree in 1956.

He was employed by the U.S. Forest Service from 1956 to 1960. From 1960 to 1990, he worked for the N.C. Division of Forest Resources in Butner and Elizabethtown, retiring from Bladen Lakes State Forest as Forest Supervisor. Along with his career in forestry, he also served in the National Guard Army Reserves.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26 at Jones Lake State Park with Father Rob Spainhour officiating. A time of visitation will follow.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Ann Hood of the home; five daughters, Rebecka Hood Baxter of Elizabethtown, Kathryn Hood Gross of Tacoma, Wash., Lori Hood Loschert of Dolores, Colo., Sherry Hood Dulling of Eldersburg, Md., and Amy Hood Hill of White Oak; two sons, Barry W. Hood of Wilmington, and Leonard Dale Hood of Raleigh; a sister, Elizabeth Hood Hardin of Johnson City, Tenn., and 13 grandchildren.

LIZ H. SELLERS

THOMASVILLE--Frances Louise “Liz” Hardwick Sellers, 72, a resident of 15 Fifth Avenue, died Tuesday morning, March 21, 2006 in the Britthaven of Davidson Nursing Center.  She was born Oct. 24, 1933 in Columbus County, a daughter of Jesse Love Hardwick and Ada Jane Hardee Hardwick. She was a retired employee with Thomas Built Buses of High Point, where she was an active participant on their softball and bowling teams. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother O’Neil Hardwick of Nakina. On Sept. 23, 1971 she was married to Johnny Sellers, who survives of the home.  Also surviving are a daughter, Mitzie Barbour of High Point;  three sons, Allen Ray of Arden, Gerald Ray and his wife Trish of Mooresville, and Danny Blizzard of Thomasville;  and four grandchildren, Kasey Ray, David Ray, Blair Barbour and Devin Barbour.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 24 at 11 a.m. in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel with the Rev. Ben Hurley officiating.  Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home of Thomasville is handling the arrangements.

GENNETTER BULLOCK

FAIR BLUFF – Gennetter King Bullock, 99, died March 20, 2006 at her residence. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at Butler Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Fair Bluff with the Reverends Ronald Alford, interim pastor, conducting the eulogy and Thomas Register, presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include four sons, A.J. Bullock, Deacon Henry Bullock, Owen B. Bullock, all of Fair Bluff; and Troy Bullock of Manalapen, N.J.; a daughter, Louvenia McMillan of Fair Bluff; 52 grandchildren, 116 great-grandchildren, and 113 great-great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held from 1-7 p.m. Friday, March 24 at the funeral home. A wake will be held from 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Family will receive friends at 150 E. Brook St., Fair Bluff.

 

CRAVEN R. PHILLIPS
Retired from N.C. D.O.T.

CLARKTON – Craven Randolph Phillips, 77, of the Mt. Calvary community, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Lumberton.

He was the son of the late Hughie Sanford and Effie Downing Phillips and the husband of the late Sarah Margaret Hobbs Phillips.

Phillips was a member of Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation, Bridge Maintenance Division.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 23 at Mt. Calvary Original Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Garland Suggs officiating. Interment will follow in the Owens Cemetery in Bladenboro. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl P. Soles of Bladenboro; a son, Gary W. Phillips of Clarendon; two sisters, Cathy Suggs of Fayetteville, and Joyce Jackson of Creedmoor; a brother, Preston Phillips of Lumberton; and four grandchildren.

 

CLARA THIGPEN MATTHEWS
Homemaker and gardener

LEXINGTON – Clara Thigpen Matthews, 97, formerly of Whiteville, died Monday, March 20, 2006 at Lexington Health Care.

Matthews was born Oct. 23, 1908 in Duplin County. She was the daughter of the late Julia and Walter Thigpen. She was a homemaker and gardener. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and lived every day by her strong Christian values. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Daniel Matthews in 1978 as well as her nine sisters and brothers.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 24 at Community Funeral Home in Beulaville with the Rev. Tommy Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at East Duplin Memorial Gardens in Beulaville. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Community Funeral Home of Beulaville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Matthews Routh and husband Hal of Lexington; a grandson, Scott Routh and wife Michele of Thomasville; a granddaughter, Melissa Routh of Nashville, Tenn.; and a great-grand-daughter, Hailey Elizabeth Routh; two sisters, Myrtle Long of Kinston, and Swannie Herring of Warsaw, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lexington Health Care and Carolina House of Lexington for the loving care given to Mrs. Matthews during her residence in Lexington.

 

MARGARET E. PHIFER
Homemaker

CLARKTON – Margaret E. Phifer, 85, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at Rehobeth AME Zion Church by the Rev. Johnas M. Freeman. Burial will follow in the Jones Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Gordon and Joann Blanks, both of Clarkton; three sons, Earl C. Freeman and Jerry Freeman, both of Clarkton, and Leon Freeman of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Alice Spaulding of Clarkton, and Peggy Spaulding of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a brother, Edward Shaw of Clarkton.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday from noon-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon. Viewing will be at the church Saturday from 1-2 p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.

 

LLOYD MILES
Veteran

CERRO GORDO – Lloyd Miles, 84, died Monday, March 20, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church in Cerro Gordo with the Rev. Dr. Oscar Blanks officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Tabor Memorial Gardens. D&A Funeral Service of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Miles; two sons, Larry Miles of Wendell, and Felton Miles of Green Sea, S.C.; two brothers, Eugene Spencer of Long Island, N.Y., and Charlie Spencer of Herrell; a sister, Gladys Miles of Cerro Gordo; and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 24 at the funeral home from noon-8 p.m. and from 1-2 p.m. at the church and immediately after the service.

 

ANNIE LAWRENCE LEWIS SMITH
Retired school teacher

CHARLOTTE – Annie Lawrence Lewis Smith, 87, went home to be with her Lord on March 22, 2006. She was born in Chadbourn on Nov. 4, 1918 to John Charles Lewis and Annie Louise Swails Lewis as their youngest of seven daughters and one son.

In 1940 she graduated Cum Laude from Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. She married DeWitte Smith in 1942 at Chadbourn Baptist Church.

Smith taught English, French and world history for 38 years in Columbus County Schools, including high schools in Fair Bluff, Cerro Gordo, Evergreen, Chadbourn and her last years before retirement at West Columbus High School in Cerro Gordo. She will be remembered by her students and co-workers as a conscientious, dedicated and caring teacher who loved her subject matter and her students.

She was a member of Chadbourn Baptist Church and taught Sunday school there during her working years. Her family was very important to her. She had many fond memories of family gatherings at her home in her early years and later when she married and lived at her home place at 415 Railroad Avenue. In 2001, she and her husband moved to a private care facility in Charlotte.

Final rites will be held at Chadbourn Baptist Church on Saturday, March 26 at 4 p.m. with the Rev. C.F. McDowell officiating. Burial will follow at the Chadbourn Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Hannah S. Modrell and son-in-law, Walt Modrell, both of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Charles D. Waters and wife, Katie Pawluk of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Caroline Perez and husband, Rev. Jay Perez, of Florence, S.C., and Melissa Fenn and husband, Gordon Fenn of Manteo; two great-grandchildren, Felix Alexander Waters of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Hannah Moriah Perez of Florence, S.C.; and her sister, Margaret Peal of Chadbourn.

Visitation will be held Friday from 6:30-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Sardis Oaks in Charlotte and the support staff from Hospice at Charlotte for their loving and compassionate care of both her and her husband and their immediate family during their recent illnesses. WHITEVILLE – Vernon Whittington, 66, died Thursday, March 23, 2006 at Duke Medical Center, Durham.

TONY TYSINGER
Veteran and owned Tysinger Nursery

WHITEVILLE – Harold Dixon “Tony” Tysinger, 81, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006 in Sunbridge Nursing Home in Elizabethtown. He was born July 24, 1924 in Waxhaw, the son of the late Arden and Ruth McGirt Tysinger.

Tysinger formerly owned and operated Tysinger Nursery in Whiteville. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was widower of Irene King Tysinger.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 24 at Peace Baptist Church by the Rev. Chip Hannah officiating. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Etheridge Tysinger; a son, Phillip Tysinger of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Charlie Tysinger of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Arden Hargette of Monroe, and Martha Tysinger Moore of Indian Trail; and three grandchildren.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Henry David Pierce, 58, formerly of Whiteville, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at Bridgeport Manor.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at First St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville by the Rev. Dr. S.E. Bryant. Burial will follow in Campground Cemetery in Whiteville. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sisters, Gracie Bloden of Bridgeport, Conn., and Dorthea Buntyn of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, W. Harold Pierce of Long Beach, Calif.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Friday from 5-7 p.m. Viewing will be at the church Saturday from noon-1 p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Gardner, Twin Pines Road, Whiteville.

 

RUDOLPH ‘NEAL’ WARD

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Rudolph “Neal” Ward, 64, formerly of Nakina died Thursday, March 16, 2006 in Wisconsin. He was born in Columbus County, son of the late Walter S. and Juanita Hardee Ward.

He owned and operated Wardski’s and Orchard Inn in Milwaukee for many years. He retired in 1984 as an over-the-road truck driver employed with Inland Steel Co. He was a singer and guitarist with the “Country Gentlemen” karaoke group.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25 at the Happy Home Baptist Church Cemetery. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Ward; two daughters, Andrea and Jennifer Ward of Milwaukee, Wis.; a son, Neal Ward Jr. of Kure Beach; a brother, Dwight Ward of Nakina; two sisters, Sandra Everett of Wilmington and Beulah Faulk of Tabor City; and five grandchildren.
