WCHS alumni baseball game April 1
The first-ever West Columbus High School alumni baseball game will be held Saturday, April 1 at noon at the WCHS field. Forty years of WCHS baseball will be celebrated during the alumni event. The event will get underway with a registration and a “meet and greet” session. The game will begin at noon and a home run derby will follow. WCHS head coach Ricky Young and assistant coach Keith Ransom said that the game is being used as a fund-raiser to help with some of the current needs of the Viking baseball program. Each player alumnus is asked to donate $25 to participate in the game and $10 for each round of the optional home run derby. West Columbus High School won the 1970 state 2A baseball championship and its distinguished baseball alumni include former major leaguers Otis Nixon (Class of 1977) and Donell Nixon (Class of 1980). Otis Nixon enjoyed a 20-year career in pro baseball, gaining most of his fame with Atlanta Braves and younger brother Donell played several major league seasons, mainly with San Francisco. |
