Pack beats Pats to put league
record at 2-0 Robbie Penny’s two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning brought home Ben Deans and Scott Stephens with the game-deciding runs Friday night in the Whiteville Wolfpack’s 5-3 Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference baseball victory over the Pender Patriots at Legion Stadium. Penny also had a double in the first inning when Cameron White delivered a two-run double that helped give the Wolfpack a quick 3-0 lead. Trey Nye picked up the win on the mound as he went the distance while striking out 12 batters and scattering six hits. Nye out-dueled Pender pitcher Caleb Watson, who held Whiteville to four hits while striking out nine. Pender tied the score at 3-3 with two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth. The win put Whiteville’s Waccamaw Conference record at 2-0 and season record at 4-5. The loss dropped Pender’s conference record to 0-2. The Patriots had fallen in their conference opener to Heide Trask Coach Brett Harwood’s Whiteville squad, which finished runnerup to West Columbus in last season’s Waccamaw Conference race, will play host to South Brunswick Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a Waccamaw Conference game.
