| Rams escape with two wins over HVCC By GARY RABON With a pair of dramatic finishes, the Southeastern Community College baseball team swept a Thursday doubleheader from visiting Hudson Valley Community College of Troy, N.Y. In the first game, Eric Stone drove a two-run single to right field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Rams to a 6-5 victory. In the second game, SCC’s Marcus Blackwell and Brandon Farrar sprinted home with the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth following a freak two-out Hudson Valley infield error for the Rams’ 10-9 extra-inning victory. Southeastern, which got a pair of three-run homers by Farrar in the second game, improved its season record to 12-15. Stone had opened the scoring in the first game when he led off with the first of three hits of the game and scored on a single by Diego Marquez. SCC held its 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning when Andrew Mudd ripped a three-run homer to give the Rams what appeared to be a comfortable 4-0 lead going into the final inning. But the New York squad responded with five runs in the top of the seventh to take a one-run lead into the bottom of the inning. SCC loaded the bases in the final frame and Stone came through with his two-out game-winning hit. Randy Amos picked up the mound win after coming on in relief in the seventh inning. Stone had three hits, including double, for Coach Joey Autry’s Ram squad while Mudd homered and doubled. Marquez and Jonathan Rabon each had two hits while Nic McClary and Farrar also had hits. Nate Novack had three hits for Hudson Valley. Phil Carr was the Vikings’ losing pitcher. In the second game, the Rams trailed 1-0 and were held hitless until the third inning when they exploded for five runs on doubles by Mudd and Jonathan Rabon and Farrar’s first three-run blast of the game. With the score knotted at 5-5 in the fifth inning, Marquez and Rabon reached base on singles to set up Farrar’s second home run in as many trips to the plate for an 8-5 SCC advantage. But once again Hudson Valley battled back in the top of the seventh for an 8-8 knot and held SCC scoreless in the seventh to bring on extra innings. After a scoreless eighth, the Vikings scratched across an unearned run in the top of the night for a 9-8 edge. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, SCC’s Andy Rodriquez hit a bouncer to first base for what appeared to be a routine game-ending play. But the first baseman’s toss to Viking pitcher Nick Tostos covering the bag bounced off Tostos’ glove, allowing Blackwell and Farrar to score and give SCC the stunning win. Former South Columbus High pitching ace Brian Sykes picked up this first mound win after coming on in relief in the eighth inning. Along with Farrar’s two-homer, 6 RBI effort, the Rams got three hits, including a double, by Jonathan Rabon and one double each by Mudd and McClary. Marquez and Josh Hodges also had hits. Testo and Mike Hart each had two hits for Hudson Valley, whose season record dropped to 6-8.
