JAMES ‘DEVAUGHN’ REEVES
Veteran
MIRAMAR, Fla. James “Devaughn” Reeves, 83, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2006 at Memorial Hospital here.
He was born on Dec. 31, 1922 in the farm community of Hallsboro. He was a generous, loving, larger-than-life hero to his wife, seven children, 14 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was a pillar of strength and an inspiration to all that knew him.
Through the Great Depression, he learned the indomitable work ethic that would serve him and powerfully influence those close to him throughout his life.
He attended Wake Forest University until he was called to serve American in the United States Army during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and made the famed 125-mile march from one battle victory to another with General Patton. He was wounded, awarded the Purple Heart, and won two Bronze Star Medals for bravery in combat.
While stationed at Boston University, he met the former Shirley Marie Corbett on July 21, 1943. They married on Jan. 5, 1947 and were wed for 59 years. He served as president and owner of the Miami Beach Land Survey firm Zurwelle-Whittaker, Inc. for more than 30 years. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, and a member of the American Legion for 46 years.
Reeves is survived by his wife, Shirley; three sons, James D. Jr., David, and Stephen; four daughters, Diane, Nancy, Judy, and Linda; two brothers, Morris and Elwood; a sister, Betty; five grandsons, James D. Reeves III, Matthew Reeves, Eric Reeves, Steven Vanek, Tyler Siwek, and Brandon Vanek, eight granddaughters, Kelly White, Jennifer Cox, Melanie Reeves, Kimberly Parrillo, Tiffany Reeves, Ashley Reeves, Brittany Reeves, and Jenna Siwek; great-grandson, Eric Lastinger; and four great-grand-daughters, Alexys Lastinger, Kennady Parrillo, Rylee Cox, and Payton White.
CECIL THOMAS ‘TOMMY’
STRICKLIN II
LAURINBURG Cecil Thomas “Tommy” Stricklin II, 29, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at Scotland Memorial Hospital here. He was born on Oct. 25, 1976 the son of the late Cecil Thomas and Dorothy Jean Stricklin.
Final rites will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, March 31 at Richard Boles Funeral Home Chapel in Laurinburg. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery in Wagram.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Batten Stricklin; mother- and father-in-law, Welton and Ann Batten of Chadbourn.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 30 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
REAGAN K. MOORE
Youngest heart transplant recipient in
Columbus County
TABOR CITY Reagan Kathleen Moore, 3, died Monday, March 27, 2006 in Duke University Hospital of an illness non-related to her heart.
She was the youngest heart transplant recipient in Columbus County, receiving the gift of a new heart on Jan. 17, 2003.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 30 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Graylen Mitchell, with interment in Myrtle Green Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her parents, Andrew and Pam Spivey Moore; a brother: Jacob Moore; maternal grandparents: Billy and Sharon Spivey of Tabor City; paternal grandparents: Melton and Irene Moore of Lake Waccamaw; great-grandparents: Eliza Spaulding and Ottie Moore, both of Lake Waccamaw.
ROBERT EUGENE ‘BOBBY’ SESSIONS
Funeral services for Robert Eugene “Bobby” Sessions were held Wednesday, March 29 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Delma Cribb officiating. Burial followed in Columbus Memorial Park.
Sessions was a member of Peace United Methodist Church, chairman of the Columbus County Board of Elections and a former president of the Columbus County Farm Bureau. He graduated from Hallsboro High School and N.C. State University, had served as a member of the county school board and as a county commissioner, and was involved in American Legion Post 137 and its summer baseball program for youth.
Survivors include his wife, Hattie Merle Hardee Sessions; two daughters, June S. Harper of Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla. and Cynthia S. Hansen of Whiteville; two sons, Gene Sessions of Ocean Isle and Bobby Sessions of Raleigh; a brother, James R. “Speed” Sessions of Whiteville; four grandchildren and two grandchildren.

CHADBOURN Carl McPherson, 75, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, March 26, 2006 at 9 p.m. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Hugh Thomas and Zellie Lee Nealey McPherson. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Isaac McPherson and Joe McPherson.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 28 at Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jackie Godwin with interment following in the McPherson Cemetery in Chadbourn. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jaunita McPherson of the home; two sons, Jeffery McPherson and wife Cynthia of Chadbourn, and Ray McPherson and wife Tressa of Evergreen; three daughters, Nancy Hinson and husband Gene, and Nadine Hinson and husband Randy, all of Clarendon, Clara McPherson and husband Ted of Chadbourn; a brother, Jacob McPherson of Chadbourn. He was blessed with 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Sam McPherson, Carey Hinson, Bronson Hinson, Timmy Duncan, Jason Turbeville, and Ray McPherson.
CLEO GORE WARD
Storeowner and assistant postmaster
NAKINA Cleo G. Ward, 91, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at Liberty Commons Nursing Home in Whiteville.
She was born Aug. 3, 1914 in Columbus County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie M. Gore and Eva Stocks Gore; husband, Leamon C. Ward Sr.; brothers, Thurston Gore, Rifton J. Gore, Rembert R. Gore, and William B. Gore.
Ward was an active member of Nakina Baptist Church until her recent stay at Liberty Commons. She was active in community missions during her lifetime, visiting and caring for the sick and less fortunate. She was active at the Bug Hill Senior Citizens Center taking part in all activities. She was a retired storeowner and assistant postmaster. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, sports and all church activities.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 30 at Nakina Baptist Church with Dr. Corbin Cooper and the Rev. Timothy Fowler officiating. Interment will follow in Columbus Memorial Park in Whiteville. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her daughters, Hilda W. Butler and husband Carl and Doris W. Butler and husband Royce; a son, Leamon C. Ward Jr. and wife Dena, sisters, Alice G. Johnson and Freda G. Fipps; brothers, Winston Gore and Thomas E. Gore; grandchildren, Carl E. Butler Jr., Steven C. Ward, Revice Butler, Crystal W. Fipps, Scarlet B. Baldwin, Rhett Butler and Hunter Ward; and eight great-grandchildren.

BLADENBORO Dewey Robert Davis, 79, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at his residence.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 30 at Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Greenwood officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Davis; a son, Steve Davis; two brothers, Byron Davis and Paul Davis; two sisters, Larue Todd and Mamie Seals; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Mason, veteran, and retired from IP
BOLTON J.C. Hines, 79, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Hines was a Mason, served in the United States Marine Corp., and retired from International Paper Co.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1 at Green Chapel Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Henry Jones Jr. Burial with Masonic rites will be at Restwell Cemetery #1. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include four daughters, Terri Jones and Adrenollyn Moore, both of Bolton, Ruth Munn of East Arcadia, and Annie Godwin of Augusta, Ga.; two sons, Eddie Godwin of Garner and Felton Godwin, both of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Mable Morgan of Richlands and Leona Anderson of Vero Beach, Fla.
Viewing will be at the funeral home on Friday, March 31 from noon until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Saturday from 1-2 p.m. and again following the service.

GREEN SEA, S.C. Regena Annette Green McNair, 76, formerly of Whiteville, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006 in Marion County Medical Center, Marion, S.C.
She was born in New Hanover County, the daughter of the late Charles Walker and Pauline Jackson Green. She was the widow of Ralph S. McNair Jr. She as preceded in death by a sister, Reba Edwards.
McNair was employed with the N.C. Boy’s & Girl’s Home at Lake Waccamaw until her retirement in 1981. She was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, served as WMU president and on the pulpit committee.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 31 at the Smith Family Cemetery on Honey Hill Road, Hallsboro by the Rev. Bobby Phillips. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her children and their families, Mary Beth and Calvin Gilleland, Grayson and Hope Edwards, Polly Nikl, Pat and Jim Hardbeck, and Cherie and Luther Hayes. She also had 16 grandchildren and seven great-grand-children.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, March 30 at the funeral home.
WHITEVILLE Estaleen Walton Ray, 70, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. She was born July 1, 1935 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Jim and Maude McPherson Walton. She was the widow of Cecil Ray.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 31 at the graveside at McPherson Cemetery in Beaverdam by the Reverends David Watts and Jackie Godwin. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by two daughters, Bennecia Lynn Lee of Whiteville and Marsha Ray of Raleigh; two brothers, Donald Walton of North Mrytle Beach, S.C. and Roger Walton of Whiteville; a sister, Dorothy Ivey of Sanford; three grandsons. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Henry Walton.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday, March 30 at the funeral home.
