| Lady Pack’s S. McCallum, Vikings’ Everette lead All-Columbus hoop picks By DAN BISER Scoring, rebounding, passing, shot-blocking, ball-hawking … you name it. Whiteville High senior Shannon McCallum and West Columbus High junior Chaz Everette supplied plenty of everything for their respective basketball teams during the 2005-06 season. It both cases, their play helped lead to plenty of winning. The double-double term was well within reach and a triple-double was also in the strong realm of possibility each time they took the floor. For the third straight year, Shannon McCallum has been named the Columbus County Girls Basketball Player of the Year after pacing the Whiteville Lady Wolfpack to a 25-1 season, including a berth in the Eastern N.C. 2A regional finals where it fell in overtime to eventual state champion Farmville Central. Everette,a main cog in the success of the West Columbus High boys squad that posted a 23-4 record and advanced to the sectional 1A finals where it lost to eventual state champion Wallace-Rose Hill, has been selected the Columbus County Boys Basketball Player of the Year. McCallum and Everette lead the list of selections on The News Reporter 2006 All-Columbus County Basketball teams. East Columbus High’s Karlyn Stephens and West Columbus High’s Michael Powell have been selected county girls and boys coaches of the year respectively. The News Reporter has selected All-Columbus basketball teams since 1951. Shannon McCallum is joined on the All-Columbus First Team by younger sister Paige McCallum, a sophomore, and junior Talena Faison. Shannon McCallum is on the First Team for the third straight year and Paige McCallum and Faison are First Team selections for the second straight year. Also selected to First Team are East Columbus senior forward Candra Powell and South Columbus senior guard Weatherly “Web” Graham Everette, who has been chosen to Boys First Team for the second straight year, is joined by teammate Zack Andrews, a senior forward along with East Columbus junior guard Jerry Moore, Whiteville senior guard Marcel Williams and South Columbus sophomore forward Derrick Clay. Moore, who paced East Columbus to the Waccamaw Conference regular-season and tournaent championships and a 19-6 record, is also a second-time First Team selection. Girls second-team selections are East Columbus’ Angelica Moore, Jasmine Young and T.T. Bennett, Whiteville’s Portia Baldwin and South Columbus’ Amanda Dowe. Boys second team selections are East Columbus’ Cameron Spears and Odell Hampton, West Columbus’ Mikey Bilal and Willie Smith, and Whiteville’s Chris Grant. In her first year as head coach, Karlyn Stephens, guided the Lady Gators to a 19-7 record, their first winning season since 2000. The East Columbus girls, who finished runnerup to Whiteville in Waccamaw Conference regular-season and tournament play, turned in the team’s best record since 1996 when it posted a 20-5 mark. Coach Michael Powell, in his 18th season at the WCHS boys helm, directed his team to a combined 6-0 record over its three county opponents and went unbeaten agaisnt all non-conference opposition. His and went on a strong 12- game winning streak before losing in the sectional final. The Vikings won the Southeastern Conference tournament after a runnerup finish in regular-season play. |
