Time to build
playground
in Chadbourn

Ever wanted to participate in an old-fashioned community barn raising?

Chadbourn’s got something similar to that March 29 through April 2 except that it’s even better: the building of a long-needed playground for the community’s children.

Project leader Peg Barnhill and committee members are looking for 700 volunteers in the next three weeks who will serve in various capacities for this grass-roots fund-raising and building project for children in the Chadbourn area.

About one-third of the 1,000 volunteers needed have committed to hammer nails, drill holes, feed volunteers, paint and perform other tasks.

You don’t have to be from Chadbourn or be an experienced builder to help. Many people and businesses have donated everything from dirt to equipment. More donations are needed as well as “Build Day” approaches.

The playground building project is monumental, and we don’t recall many projects that seek to involve so many people in a hands-on way -- a way that will give everyone who participates a degree of ownership in an effort that will benefit Chadbourn areas families for many years to come.

Sure, the playground could be built in a piecemeal fashion, but the danger is that it would never become all that it’s designed to be. Having a “playground raising” and doing it in five days has a feel of urgency and excitement to it.

And it’s a project that’s worth getting excited about, and we hope county residents will rise to meet the challenge.

A call-a-thon is underway now seeking volunteers and Kinlaw can be reached at 654-1297.

This great vision won’t happen unless people get behind it, even if just three or four hours or a few dollars are all that can be spared.
