OBITUARIES
NANCY M. BLANKS
Homemaker

DELCO – Nancy Marion Blanks, 83, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 6 at Union Baptist Church at Lake Waccamaw by the Rev. Ronald Campbell. Burial will follow in Mitchell Field Cemetery in Clarkton. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Blanks of Delco; a son, Jerry Blanks of Wilmington; and a sister, Doris Brown of Durham.

Viewing will be at the church Monday following the service.

 

VIRGINIA C. CAINES

TABOR CITY – Virginia Cartrette Caines, 78, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late William Marshal Cartrette and Dessie Lou Housand Cartrette. She was the widow of Orian Olene Caines.

Final rites were held Saturday, March 4 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Reverends Wendell Ray and Ragsdale Allsbrook. Interment followed in Norris Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include six sons, Bill Caines and Spencer Caines, both of Tabor City; Jerry Caines of Interlachen, Fla.; Dexter Caines of Spartanburg, S.C.; Dean Caines of Conyers, Ga.; Sammy Caines of Aynor, S.C.; two brothers, Ottis Cartrette of Jacksonville, Fla.; Paul Cartrette of Calahan, Fla.; a sister, Myrtle Coleman of Tabor City; 18 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren.

 

ROSA LEE GRAHAM

CERRO GORDO – Rosa Lee Graham, 94, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at her residence.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Oscar M. Blanks Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Memorial Gardens. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Idella Jackson and Mary Emily Gause of Cerro Gordo.

Viewing will be Monday, March 6 from noon-7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m.- noon at the funeral home. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday following the service.

 

ANN M. SLOAN

BLADENBORO – Ann Massengill Sloan, 96, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at Elizabethtown Nursing Center. She was the daughter of the late William Robert Massengill and Susan Virginia Stanley. She was the widow of Hugh Sloan. She was predeceased by a son, Hugh Sloan Jr.

Memorial services were held Saturday, March 4 at First Baptist Church in Bladenboro by the Rev. Bert Young. Burial followed in Mont Lawn Cemetery in Raleigh. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Pat Hasbrouck of Bladenboro; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

WILMER B. PATTERSON

CLARENDON – Wilmer Brooks Patterson, 84, died Friday, March 3, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Lucian Barshey Patterson and Amy Elizabeth Long Patterson.

Final rites were held Sunday, March 5 at Sweet Home Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Faulk. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

 

LACONYA REEVES
Retired deputy sheriff, Mason

WHITEVILLE – Laconya Reeves, 87, died Friday, March 3, 2006 at Liberty Commons.

Reeves was a retired deputy sheriff, 33º Mason of Everready Lodge, Allen-Mingo Consistory, Ouda Temple, church deacon, and trustee.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 8 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Algernon McKenzie. Burial with Masonic rites, will follow in Millican Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Christine Carr of Hallsboro; two sisters, Ruth Baldwin and Mable Artis of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Wilton Reees of Huntington, N.Y.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Tuesday from noon-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Wednesday from noon-1 p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.

There will be a wake Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home at which time fraternal rites will be performed.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Carr, 1618 Sam Potts Highway, Hallsboro.

 

NORA H. McPHERSON

OCEAN ISLE BEACH – Nora Hyatt McPherson, 87, formerly of the Beaverdam community died Friday, March 3, 2006 in Brunswick County Hospital. She was born May 7, 1918 in Dillon County, S.C., the daughter of the late Leo and Nancy Brigman Hyatt. She was the widow of Ed McPherson.

She was employed with Columbus Regional Healthcare for 40 years as a CNA until her retirement. After retirement she was employed with Interim Healthcare.

Final rites were conducted Monday, March 6 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Reverends Jackie Godwin, Lotis Joyner, and Bryan Cartwright. Burial followed in the Peacock’s Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Carlene McPherson Stanley of Ocean Isle Beach; a brother, Willis Hyatt of Clarendon; a sister, Loris McPherson of Chadbourn; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, the late R.C. Hyatt, Eugene Hyatt, and Levon Hyatt; two sisters, Imogene Townsend and Virginia Mintz; and a stepson, L.B. McPherson.

 

NANCY NUNNERY HIGH
Hairdresser

WHITEVILLE – Nancy Nunnery High, 69, died Saturday, March 4, 2006 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington.

She was a member and Sunday school teacher at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Clarkton. She was a hairdresser, and an avid lover of antiques.

Final rites were held Monday, March 6 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Clarkton. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Gaskins Funeral Home of Clarkton handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, James Woody High Sr.; four children, Max High of Clarkton, Anthony Ray High of Whiteville, Pamela Sue High of Boiling Springs Lakes, and James W. “Jimmy” High Jr. of Fayetteville; a sister, Frances Inderlin and a brother, Roy Nunnery, both of Clarkton; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the home of James Woody High.
