Vikings sink
Stallions to
stay unbeaten

VINEGAR HILL – Senior Ryan McCleney had a tough stint on the pitcher’s mound Tuesday, but his bat more than made up for it.

McCleney, who couldn’t make it out of the first inning with his pitching start for the West Columbus Vikings, returned to his regular shortstop position and finished the game with four hits, including two doubles, in an 18-6 pounding of host South Columbus.

The game was halted after five innings by the 10-run rule as the Vikings drilled 14 hits off seven South Columbus pitchers. Stephen Nealey, who relieved McCleney in the first inning picked up the pitching victory.

Coach Ricky Young’s West Columbus team will take a 4-0 record into Friday’s 5 p.m., home game against arch-rival Whiteville.

South Columbus carried a 1-2 record into Wednesday’s game against Fairmont (see result in A-Section), The Stallions will play host to West Brunswick Friday at 5.

The 2005 Waccamaw Conference champion Vikings and Stallions were tied 4-4 after one inning but West Columbus brought home eight runs in the second and six in the third.

J.D. White, Daniel Britt and Timothy Brown each had two WCHS hits. Devon Brown and Nealey had doubles.

Garrett Bullock had two doubles for West Columbus and Justin Creech added two hits. Donovan Watts and Lee Jacobs each had a double. The Stallions, who fell to the Vikings 15-7 in their first meeting, had nine hits.
