The Whiteville Wolfpack shook off the effects of its disappointing 0-2 season start Tuesday by running to a 13-0 baseball victory over the visiting East Bladen Eagles at Legion Stadium.

The game was halted in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule as the Wolfpack avenged a 5-4 season-opening loss to the Eagles.

Winning pitcher Robbie Penny gave up only two hits and retired 12 straight batters between the first and fifth innings. Penny, who struck out six batters, also knocked a run-scoring double in a seven-run, second-inning surge that gave the Wolfpack a 10-0 lead.

Senior third baseman Scott Stephens led the Wolfpack batting order with three hits, three runs and three runs batted in. The entire WHS starting lineup hit safely as the Wolfpack put its record at 1-2.

Ben Deans had two hits while Cameron White and Trey Nye each had doubles.

The WHS offense was also aided by six East Bladen errors.

“I was pleased with the way we swung the bats and put the ball in play,” Harwood said. “We struggled some in our first two games and there were several encouraging things about tonight. We’re still a long way from where we need to be, but I think we’re starting to head in the right direction.”

Jamey Warren was the losing pitcher for East Bladen. Trip Lancaster and Justin Wilson had the lone Eagle hits.

Whiteville will travel to play West Columbus on Friday at 5 p.m.
