OBITUARIES
LELA JONES

WILMINGTON - Lela Jones died Friday, April 26, 2006 at her residence.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3 at First Baptist Church in Wilmington. Burial will follow in Green Lawn Memorial Park. Jordan Funeral Home of Wilmington is handling the arrangements.

BILLY RICHARD DUNCAN

ASHEBORO -- Billy Richard Duncan, 67, died Saturday, April 29, 2006 at his home. Duncan was born Aug. 30, 1938 in Whiteville, the son of Mayo and Carrie E. (Robinson) Duncan. 

Duncan was a native of Columbus County and a retired truck driver. He was a member of the Truck Drivers Teamster Union with the Local 557  Chapter in Baltimore and the Local Chapter 134 in Indianapolis.  He formerly owned and operated Billy´s 76 Gas Station in Seagrove and Duncan´s Trucking Service in Baltimore. He was a member of the New Beginning Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his former wife,  Brenda Wright Duncan.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro with the Rev. Mark Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Pugh Funeral Home of Asheboro is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife: Mary Taylor Duncan, five sons: Billy R. Duncan Jr., David A. Duncan, both of Hallsboro, Michael "Cotton" Duncan of Fair Bluff, Douglas Duncan of Asheboro, and Gary "Buddy" Duncan of Lexington; two daughters: Jeanette Duncan of Chadbourn, and  Donna McIe of Randleman; step-son: Daniel B. Taylor of Little River, S.C.; two step-daughters: Vickie Kummerfeldt of Honolulu, Hawaii  and  Laurie Anne Taylor of Hallsboro;   14 grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren, and a step- great-grandchild; four brothers: Earl Duncan of Madison, Royce Duncan, Alton Duncan and  Larry Ray Duncan, all of High Point; seven sisters: Shula Mae Ezzell of Bladenboro, Eunice Cox, Frances Terrell, Nellie Vines, Helen Harmon, Alice Faye Duncan and Ruby Catron all of High Point.

Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville Street Mall, Two Hannover Square, Suite 1600, Raleigh, N.C.  27601 or Hospice Of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, N.C.  27204-0009.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 1, from 6-8 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, N.C. 

CLARIE DEXTER "JUNIOR" WHITE

CHADBOURN - Clarie Dexter "Junior" White, 82, died Friday, April 28, 2006 after a period of declining health. He was born on Jan. 12, 1924 in Town Creek in Brunswick County the son of Clarie Dexter White Sr. and Amma Gurganious.

White was raised on a farm in the Montague community of Pender County near the home place of his parents. He came to Columbus County in the early 1940's where he first worked on the farm of Alvie Smith on Honey Hill Road in Hallsboro. While working on the Smith farm, he met his first wife, Mary Sadler Miller (daughter of Benjamin Abner Miller and Nancy Bogan Holcomb) and they were married in 1945. Subsequent to farm life, he worked at the shipyard in Newport News, Va. as a pipe fitter. Work permitting, he spent weekends at home with his family in Hallsboro and stayed during the week in Newport News. He went to work for Dupont in Brunswick County and retired from Dupont. After retirement from Dupont, he resumed his love of the soil and as long as his health permitted, he remained active by growing corn and grinding meal for family and friends.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Shallotte. He was a kind and gentle man and had a knack for making one feel at home regardless of the circumstances. He will be missed as a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all that knew him.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at Bladen Funeral Home Chapel in Elizabethtown with Ministers Ray Vanderpool, Bob Tipton, and Phillip Norwood officiating. Burial will follow in Flynn Cemetery in Whiteville. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Farry Gertrude Smith of Chadbourn, his children, Marion McWorter of Onalaska, Texas, Phillip Charles White of Wilmington; Nancy White King Pearsall of Riegelwood; Larry Dean White of Wilmington; Claire McQueen of Whiteville; Beverly Larue White of Hallsboro; Penny Kay Lynn of Clarkton; Tammy Sue Young of Hallsboro; Sandy Benjamin White of Salisbury; two stepchildren, Paul Smith of Whiteville, and Susie Lee of Bladenboro; a brother, James David White of Leland; 23 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, three great - great - grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and a step-great-grandchild.

White was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Aubrey Dexter White in 1921 and Daniel Barlow White in 1986, Samuel Spergon White in 1998; two sister, Susan Eulalia White in 1922 and  Annie Katherine White in 1931; a daughter, Tressie Lorraine White in 1956; and his first wife, Mary Sadler Miller, died in 1981.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 1 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

HARRY J. WORKINGER
Veteran

TABOR CITY - Harry James Workinger, 61, died Friday, April 28, 2006. He was the son of the late Charles Workinger and Howard and Louise Jacob Soles.

He was a United States Army veteran.

Final rites were held Sunday, April 30 at Emmanuel Holiness Church with burial following in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Workinger of the home; a daughter, Susan W. Cartrette of Tabor City; mother and step-father, Howard and Louise Soles of Tabor City; and four grandchildren.

WILLIE MYERS JR.

TABOR CITY - Willie Myers Jr., 54, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital in Loris, S.C. He was the son of the late Willie and Carnelia Myers.

Final rites were held Sunday, April 30 at Great Grace Non-Denominational Church in Tabor City with Bishop Anthony Gerald Sr. delivering the eulogy. Burial followed in Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include seven daughters, Matilda Temoney, Eron Mason, Lafayette Myers, Tammy Rowell, Angel Myers, Martina Myers, all of Green Sea, S.C., and Kiera Kerney of Chadbourn; two sons, Willie Myers III and Nehemiah Myers; four step-children, Justin Stackhouse, Dustin Stackhouse, Melissa Stackhouse, and Shalonda Stackhouse; three sisters, Ella Faulk, Ethel King, and Nora Lee Johnson; and a brother, David Myers of Daytona Beach, Fla.

 

DAISY SKIPPER

WHITEVILLE - Daisy Frances Skipper, 88, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006. She was born in Columbus County on Aug. 21, 1917, the daughter of the late Major and Velma Pierce Ward. She was the widow of Lloyd Glenn Skipper.

She was a member of Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church. She was formerly employed with Block Manufacturing Company in Wilmington.

Final rites were held Saturday, April 29 at Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church by the Reverends Steward Norris and Slade Skipper. Interment followed in Peacock's Columbus Memorial Park. Peacocks Funeral Home in Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Garland "Bill" Skipper, Douglas Skipper, and Elmer Jay Skipper, all of Whiteville; a brother, Charlie Ward of Hallsboro; four sisters, Carrie Sellers Beasley of Hallsboro, Ruby Canady of Whiteville, Rachel Reynolds of Wilmington and Lela Mae Porter of Shallotte; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Boyce, and two brothers, Grady Ward and Major Paul Ward.

 

MARTHA MAE WILSON
Delicatessen cook

CHADBOURN - Martha Mae Wilson, 46, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at her residence. She was a delicatessen cook.

Final rites were held Sunday, April 30 at Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Fair Bluff. Burial followed in Hickory Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Tina Elmore, Latasha Elmore, and Winetti Wilson, all of Chadbourn; a son, Patrick Elmore of Kentucky; her mother, Minnie Jones of Chadbourn; three sisters, Debbie Johnson, Lillian Bennett, and Kathy Ellison, all of Chadbourn; and a brother, Franklin Elmore of Green Sea, S.C.

 

JAMES D. STRICKLAND

LEXINGTON - James D. Strickland, 62, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at his home.

He was born in Columbus County on July 11, 1943 to Herman Strickland and Lucy Blackwell Strickland. He was retired from Leggett & Platt, Inc. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Final rites were held Saturday, April 29 at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Akers officiating. Burial followed in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Davidson Funeral Home of Lexington handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Ula Mae Varner Strickland of the home; a daughter, Terry Strickland Jordan of Lexington; two brothers, Eugene Strickland of South Carolina, and Sammy Strickland of Bladenboro; two half-brothers, Robert Penney of Whiteville, and James Penney Jr. of Cerro Gordo; a sister, Rosie Cooper of Fair Bluff; and a grandson.

ALDA E. SARVIS

FLORENCE, S.C. - Alda Etheridge Sarvis, 68, died Saturday, April 29, 2006 in a Florence hospital after a brief illness.

Sarvis was born in Whiteville, a daughter of the late Harvey Junior and Laurence Elizabeth Long Etheridge. She was a homemaker and attended Southside Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at Southside Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum. Waters-Powell Funeral Home of Florence, S.C. is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Bobby E. Sarvis of Florence; two daughters, Lisa (Ralph) Vinson and Tammy (John) Kirven, both of Florence, S.C.; five grandchildren, Zachary Vinson, Blake Vinson, Taylor Broach, Bryce Broach, and John Kirven Jr.; a sister, Odie Geneva Etheridge Long of Whiteville; and two brothers, Harvey Elmer Etheridge and Thomas H. Etheridge, both of Whiteville.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ruby Etheridge Long and three brothers, Jesse Roscoe Etheridge, Rowe Etheridge, and William Henry Etheridge.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Southside Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Southside Baptist Church, 307 W. Richbourg Lane, Florence, S.C. 29505.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 1 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

JOLEEN D. REAVES

WHITEVILLE - Joleen Josephine Durante Reaves, 48, died Sunday, April 30, 2006 at her residence.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

 

ANDREW MOULSDALE
Veteran

FAYETTEVILLE - Andrew "Andy" Morlok Moulsdale, 84, died Sunday, April 30, 2006 at Highland House Nursing Center here.

He was a native of Hartford County, Maryland

and was the son of the late, Andrew Gilbert and Marie Morlok Moulsdale. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 3 at Porter Swamp Baptist Church with the Reverends Tim Moore and Al Puester. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Leona Kate Hilburn Moulsdale of Fayetteville and formerly of Columbus County; two daughters, Janis M. Wooten of Fayetteville and Katherine M. Myers of Ridgely, W. Va.; three sisters, Rosella Glenn of Pikesville, Md., Dorothy Edwards of Aberdeen, Md., and Carol Reitz of Belair, Md.; three grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at the funeral home.
