| Penny fans 18 in one-hit shutout over S. Brunswick BOILING SPRING LAKES Junior righthander Robbie Penny helped the Whiteville Wolfpack continue to recover from its recent holiday slump by striking out 18 South Brunswick batters while pitching a one-hitter in a 3-0 Waccamaw Conference baseball victory over the host Cougar squad. In two games pitched against South Brunswick this spring, Penny has collected a total of 29 strikeouts. The win improved the Wolfpack’s conference record to 8-1. Coach Brett Harwood’s WHS squad is 12-8 overall. It was the Wolfpack’s second straight win after suffering three consecutive losses. South Brunswick came into the game with five wins in its last six outings and was riding a three-game conference winning streak. The Cougar record fell to 3-5. South Brunswick catcher Elliott Swan had the only hit off Penny with a third-inning single to rightfield. It was the only ball hit out of the infield by the Cougars. Whiteville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Penny singled and Lloyd Enzor followed with an RBI double. It was the first of two hits for Enzor. The Wolfpack scored again in the fourth inning when Zack Spivey walked and later scored from third on a catcher’s throwing error. Chris Harris scored the third WHS run in the fifth inning after leading off with a single. Kenny Lewis was the losing pitcher for South Brunswick. Also getting hits for the Wolfpack were Cameron White, Alex Hooks and Quan Gaddy. Whiteville, which is trying to claim a state 2A playoff berth for the 23rd time in 26 seasons, will entertain Trask Tuesday night at 7.
