Red Devils
pull shocker
over Vikings

RED SPRINGS - West Columbus High pitching ace Daniel Britt threw his third straight one-hitter and yielded his first run in five games Friday night.

That single run, however, was enough to beat the Vikings as host Red Springs came away with a stunning 1-0 victory in the Southeastern 1A-2 Conference baseball matchup.

The loss snapped a nine-game Viking winning streak as the WCHS season record slipped to 18-2. The Vikings, who are still carrying their best season record since 1979, have a 7-1 mark in conference play.

West Columbus had defeated the Red Devils 6-3 in their earlier conference encounter on March 24 at Cerro Gordo.

Red Springs’ Shane Jones pitched a three-hitter while striking out six Viking batters in recording the shutout.

K. Chavis got the lone hit off Britt with a two-out single in the fifth. Chavis advanced to third on a throwing error and scored when a third- strike pitch got past the catcher.

The Red Devils, whose season record stands at 12-8, handed Britt his second defeat in eight decisions this year.

Prior to his three straight one-hitters, Britt had pitched a perfect game in a 2-0 conference victory over Red Springs.

Getting hits for West Columbus were Britt, Brett Godwin and Corey Duncan.

West Columbus, whose only other loss came to St. James High of Murrells Inlet, S.C., on March 25, will travel play at East Bladen Tuesday night at 7.
