Lady Vikings clinch
second-place finish

CERRO GORDO – Just like the boys game on the adjoining field, the West Columbus High girls softball pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a narrow victory over visiting St. Pauls.

Freshman Amber Hanson raced home from third following an errant throw from catcher to for the winning marker that gave Coach Cindy Faulk’s Lady Vikings a 5-4 win to clinch a runnerup finish in the Southeastern 1A-2A Conference.

Junior pitcher Caroline Newman struck out 12 batters and allowed only four hits in the victory that put the Lady Vikings conference record at 9-2.

Candace Walker had two hits, including a double, and two runs batted in for WCHS, which has only one senior and one junior on its entire squad.

Newman, Jessica Ransom and Patrice Jenkins had two hits each with Ransom addinga run-scoring double.

“We’re young, but I feel we have come a long way this year,” Coach Faulk said. “We’re making as strong finish and have a lot to build on for next year.”
