DETERRIS A. STEVENSON

TABOR CITY – Deterris A. Stevenson, 17, of the Iron Hill community died Saturday, May 6, 2006 at UNC Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 13, from the South Columbus High School Auditorium with Pastor Lester Frink delivering the eulogy. Burial followed in the Bristol Creek Cemetery in Dothan. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors are his parents, Timothy and Karen Stevenson; a brother, Maurice D. Stevenson; grandparents, John and Shirley Stevenson and Betty Bennett, both of Tabor City and Joe Lewis Bennett of Loris, S.C.; great-grandparents, Corine Canty of Tabor City and Lillian Soles of Loris, S.C.

WHITEVILLE – Bishop Luben E. Best, 81, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

Final rites were held Sunday, May 14 at True Way Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Elizabethtown by Bishop E. Floyd Jr. Burial followed in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Best; two daughters, Armatha Floyd and Cheryl Best, both of Whiteville; two sons, Larry Best of Leland and Nathaniel Best of Tillery; three stepdaughters, Sharon Streeter, Tanya Moon and Glenda Williams of Whiteville; a sister, Naomi Palmer of Kissimmee, Fla.; a brother, Evans O. Best of Whiteville.

 

RALPH DAVID SELLERS

LEXINGTON – Ralph David Sellers, 75, died Thursday, May 11, 2006 at Sunbridge of High Point Health Care Facility.

Sellers was born Sept. 15, 1930 in Whiteville, a son of the Rev. Lucian Washington Sellers and Sarah Jane Cartrette. A former resident of Denton for 20 years, Sellers was employed for St. Regis Paper Co. for 18 years and later drove a truck for Carolina Container.

He was a member of the Full Gospel Freewill Holiness Church in Thomasville and the Adult Sunday School. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruby Mercer and three brothers, Ray, Roy and Bruce Sellers.

He was married to the former Sharon Watts who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Vicky Rabon of Chadbourn, Lisa Snipes of Morganton, Lynn S. Leonard of Clarendon; five sons, Ronald Sellers of Lexington, Donald Sellers of Whiteville, Richard Sellers of Whiteville, James Snipes II of Lexington, Rev. Joshua Sellers and wife Susie of Trinity; a sister, Katie S. Nealey of Thomasville; 23 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 13, by the Reverends William Hutchens and Joshua Sellers at Full Gospel Freewill Holiness Church in Thomasville. Interment followed in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

REV. ROBERT RUFUS JACKSON SR.
Minister, welding instructor and veteran

HALLSBORO – Rev. Robert Rufus Jackson Sr., 73, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 in Wilmington. He was born Aug. 28, 1932 in Latta, S.C., the son of the late Robert Reuben and Lula Tyndall Jackson. He was an ordained Church of God minister for 47 years.

He was welding instructor at Southeastern Community College for 30 years until retirement and continued part time after retirement. Through SCC he was also an instructor at Nakina Alternative School and at the N.C. Department of Corrections. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 13 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Reverends Danny Williams and Raleigh Johnson. Interment was in Flynn Cemetery. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Marion Greco Jackson; five sons, Robert Jackson III of Hallsboro, Steve Jackson of Shreveport, La., Jimmy Jackson of Lake Waccamaw, David Jackson of Roxboro and John Jackson of Currie; a daughter, Linda Johnson of Ahoskie; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grand-children.

Preceded in death by two brothers, the late Horace and Harry Jackson.

 

LULA GRACE SAYRE

RALEIGH – Lula Grace Worley Sayre, 83, died May 10, 2006. She was a resident of Brighton Gardens, Raleigh. She was a native of Fair Bluff, and the daughter of the late Boyd and Minta Hammond Worley.

Sayre attended Mere-dith College and UNC Chapel Hill. She met Captain Ralph Jennings Sayre Jr. at Chapel Hill and was married Dec. 22, 1944. Capt. Sayre, a pilot with the U.S. Marine Air Corps, served during the Korean Conflict and was killed in an aircraft carrier accident in 1953.

She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Elliot and husband, Rev. Dr. Roger Elliott of Raleigh; a daughter, Dr. Sally Weinrich and husband, Dr. Martin Weinrich of Augusta, Ga. and a son, Ralph J. Sayre III and wife, Kristie Sayre of Atlanta, Ga. and Santa Fe, NM. “Granny,” as she was fondly called by her 10 grandchildren, who also survive her, Luise Weinrich, Emily Dilday, Maria Weinrich, Jenny Collins, Brent Powers, Kimberly Powers Barbee, Matt Sayre, Suzanna Grace Sayre, Stephanie Sayre, and Mark Sayre. In addition she is survived by her nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 12, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 824 North Bloodworth St., Raleigh. Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Rd., Raleigh, handled the arrangements.

WHITEVILLE – William Avery Dew, Sr., 90, died Thursday, May 11, 2006 in Wilmington. He was born June 9, 1915 in Columbus County, the son of late Jesse James and Lena Victoria Batten Dew. He was employed with Quality Ford as a salesman for 20 years. He owned and operated Dew’s Auto Sales.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 13 at Peacock’s Chapel in the Pines by the Rev. Mickie Norman. Interment was in Pierce Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Blanche Elizabeth Dowless Dew; three sons, Gene Dew of Sandusky, Ohio, Billy Dew and David “Bunky” Dew, both of Whiteville; three daughters, Joan Rhodes of Hallsboro, Nancy McCrary of Asheboro and Faye Kennedy of High Point; two brothers, Audrey Dew of Whiteville and Edison Dew of High Point; a sister, Ollie Lee of Whiteville; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

 

TAB LAMAR SPIVEY

TABOR CITY – Tab Lamar Spivey, 40, died Thursday, May 11, 2006. He was born in Columbus County.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 14 in the Inman Chapel conducted by the Rev. Russell Long. Interment followed in the Spivey Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

He is survived by a daughter, Laurn Page Spivey of Conway, S.C.; parents, Sherwood and Corrie Canard Spivey; a brother, Tim Spivey; a sister, Shannon Ray, all of Tabor City; maternal grandmother, Hazel Canard of The Plains, Va.

 

PERMELLA W. LEWIS

WHITEVILLE –Permella W. Lewis, 58, died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Friends may visit the family at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. Darryl Lewis, 2762 Red Store Road, Whiteville.

 

CALLIE A. DAVIS
Retired teacher and former mayor of Brunswick

SILER CITY – Callie A. Davis, 76, formerly of Whiteville, died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at SunBridge here. She was a retired teacher, and former mayor of Brunswick.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville by the Rev. Dr. Henry Jones Jr. Burial will follow in the Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Clarence Edward Davis of Whiteville; a sister, Fleta Price of Siler City; two brothers, James Alston and Charles Alston, both of Siler City.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Wednesday from 1-2 p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.

 

LEVASSA ‘BAT’ WILSON

FAIRFIELD, Ohio – Levassa “Bat” Wilson, 77, formerly of Whiteville, died Friday, May 12, 2006 at Mercy Hospital here.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Friends may visit the family at the home of his sister, Shirley Adams, 1620 Joe Brown Road, Chadbourn.

 

MARGARET T. NOBLES

FAIR BLUFF – Margaret Todd Nobles, 82, died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Alice Strickland Todd. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Nobles, and a son, Bailey Nobles.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 at Fair Bluff Baptist Church with Dr. Ray Lundy officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Irvin Douglas Nobles of Fair Bluff, and Danny Nobles of Cerro Gordo; two daughters, Wanda Gail Smith of Whiteville, and Freda Kay Royals of Fair Bluff; a brother, Charlie Todd of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 Monday, May 15 at the funeral home located at 795 Main Street.

 

GEORGE W. WADDELL
Veteran and member of American Legion

FAIR BLUFF – George Wilton Waddell, 72, died Friday, May 12, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Waddell was the son of the late Aubrey June and Reba Cole Waddell. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the American Legion.

Final rites were held Sunday, May 14 at Meares Funeral Home with Dr. Ray Lundy officiating. Burial followed in the Old Powell Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Waddell of the home; two daughters, Marilyn Waddell of Benson, and Carol W. Ellerbe of Conway, S.C.; a sister, Martha Frances Joyce of Raleigh; a brother, A. June Waddell of Fair Bluff; and a granddaughter.

WHITEVILLE – Craig Nance, 45, died Friday, May 12, 2006. He was the son of the late Harley Owen and Annie Lenora Nance. He was a welder.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 15 at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Tiffany Nance Enzor of Asheville, Heather Marie Nance of Cerro Gordo, and Cara Williams of Whiteville; three sisters, Frances Nance Buffkin of Whiteville, Jewel Nance Todd of Aberdeen, and Janet Nance Hammond of Cerro Gordo; and a granddaughter.

 

JAMES A. TEDDER
Veteran

LAKE WACCAMAW – James Audell Tedder, 83, died Friday, May 12, 2006 at Premier Living and Rehab Center. He was the son of the late Charlie G. Tedder and Beatrice Edge Tedder of the New Hope community.

Tedder served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at International Paper for 30 years. He was also a member of Lake Waccamaw Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Wayne Tedder.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 15 at Lake Waccamaw Baptist Church with Dr. Dale Tanner officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery at Lake Waccamaw. McKenzie Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Evans Tedder of Lake Waccamaw; two sons, James Philip Tedder, and Ronnie Randon Tedder and wife Vickie, all of Delco; a step-daughter, Diane Baysden of Lake Waccamaw; a step-son, Noah Evans of Wilmington; four sisters, Christine T. Case of Savannah, Ga., Mona Faye T. McClelland, Betty T. Smith, and Eloise T. Marker, all of Whiteville; a brother, William D. Tedder of Whiteville; six grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Frank Carroll, Mitchell Barnes, Tommy Tyler, Sonny Creech, Kevin Grice, and Spencer Duncan.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 121 W. Main St., Whiteville, N.C. 28472.

 

DORIS FAULK WARD

BLADENBORO – Doris Faulk Ward, 74, formerly of Whiteville died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the Sunbridge Nursing Facility in Elizabethtown. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Hettie Faulk.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with burial following at the Columbus Memorial Park. McKenzie Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Julius David Clemmons of Bladenboro; a son, Ray Ward of Whiteville; three sisters, Arnesa Smith of Nakina, Lucille Lewis of Lumberton, and Diane Nesbett of Dade City, Fla.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 16 at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m.
