Stallions await wild card distribution
Pack, Vikings, Gators The North Carolina High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs open Tuesday with three and possibly four Columbus County teams participating. In the 2A playoffs, Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference co-champion Whiteville (14-9) will play host on East Central Conference runnerup East Duplin Tuesday night at 7 at Legion Stadium. South Columbus (17-6), which shares the Waccamaw Conference title with Whiteville, is waiting to hear today if it has been selected as a wild card team in the 2A playoffs. If selected, the Stallions will travel for their first-round game on Tuesday. Whiteville gained the Waccamaw Conference’s lone automatic 2A berth in the state playoffs by way of its two wins over South Columbus in conference play. In the 1A playoffs, Southeastern 1A-2A Conference champion West Columbus (22-2) will play host to Union of the Super 6 Conference (9-15) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Union claimed a playoff berth by winning its conference tournament championship. East Columbus (9-13) and the top finishing 1A team in the Waccamaw Conference, will play host to Ayden-Grifton (19-5) of the Carolina Conference. Second-round action is set for Friday with the best-of-three state finals in all four classifications set for June 2-3. |
