OBITUARIES
DARCUS ‘DOT’ ROGERS ABSHER

CLINTON – Darcus “Dot” Rogers Absher, 92, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at Mary Gran Nursing Center.

She was a native of Marion County, S.C., wa the daughter of the late William Edward Rogers and Sallie Lester Mears Rogers and was the widow of James Howard Absher Sr. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carole Absher; two sisters, Christine Tillotson and Martha Murrow; four brothers, T.J. Rogers, Yates Rogers, Stokes Rogers, and Chrster Rogers. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and retired as a sales clerk at Able Warren’s general mercantile store.

Final rites were held Thursday, May 18 at Grace United Methodist Church with Dr. Ed Gunter officiating. Burial followed in Grandview Memorial Gardens. Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home of Clinton handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda A. Mathis and husband Bobby of Clinton, and Sylva A. Walters and husband Frank of Whiteville; a son, James H. Absher Jr. of Clinton; three sisters, Sarah Baker of Elizabethtown, Hazel Gibson and Hallie Yonkers, both of Florence, S.C.; three brothers, Cecil Rogers, Paul Rogers, and Monroe Rogers, all of Marion, S.C.; five grandchildren, Howard Matthis, Gene Matthis, Carol Williams, Jan Walters, and Beth Walters; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund, 800 Smith St., Clinton, N.C. 28328 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 400 Oberlin Rd., Suite 220, Raleigh, N.C. 27605-1351.

MAGGIE S. RADFORD

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. – Maggie Lee Sharpe Radford, 86, died Friday, May 12, 2006, at Lorien Riverside Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Belcamp, Md. She was born Feb. 20, 1920 in Robeson County, the daughter of the late W.L. Sharpe and Maggie Lena Flynn Sharpe. On Jan. 23, 1941 she married Henry W. Radford, living in Perryville and Havre de Grace for many years, and she was involved in the community and her church.

She worked for years as a dental assistant at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Perry Point, Md. In retirement she continued to work and was a popular tour guide for A&J Travel of Havre de Grace. She was a member of Perryville United Methodist Church and the Aiken Homemakers. She was an avid photographer, traveler and family archivist. Her hobbies were creative ceramics, and flowers.

Calling hours will be held at the Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, Md., from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 20. Final rites will begin at noon. Interment will be in Principio Cemetery, Perryville, Md. Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home of Perryville, Md. is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by a sister, Catherine S. Flynn of Riegelwood; one niece and two nephews; daughter-in-law, Ann Radford, and two grandchildren, Richard A. Radford of Chelsea, Vt. and Jennifer Bills of Woodstock, Va.

She was predeceased by her husband who died in 2003, and her son Richard B. Radford, who died in 2005.

Retired teacher and former mayor of Brunswick

SILER CITY – Callie A. Davis, 76, formerly of Whiteville, died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at SunBridge of Siler City. She was a retired teacher, and former mayor of Brunswick.

Final rites were held Wednesday, May 17 at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville by the Rev. Dr. Henry Jones Jr. Burial followed in the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Clarence Elbert Davis of Whiteville; a sister, Fleta Price of Siler City; two brothers, James Alston and Charles Alston, both of Siler City.

 

JOSEPHINE B. WASHINGTON
Homemaker

WHITEVILLE – Josephine B. Washington, 87, formerly of Tabor City, died Monday, May 15, 2006 at her residence. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20 at Holy Light Holiness Church in Tabor City by the Rev. John C. Williams Jr. Burial will follow in Butler Cemetery in Tabor City. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary A. Washington of the home; three sons, Charles Dugar of Maryland, Nathaniel Dugar of Georgia, and Willie Dugar of Washington, D.C.; and a sister, Mazie McNair of Jamaica, N.Y.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Saturday following the service.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

EVERGREEN – Elzena P. Powell, 84, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

SARAH M. TAYLOR

ELIZABETHTOWN – Sarah Margaret Taylor, 80, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Wade A. Taylor Sr. and Mary Singletary Taylor. She was predeceased by two brothers, David C. Taylor and John Edwin Taylor.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown with the Rev. Rusty Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Baptist Church-Allen Cemetery in Dublin. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two brothers, Wade Taylor Jr. of Elizabethtown, and Robert Taylor of Lumberton; and a sister, Dorothy Daniel of Elizabethtown.

 

ESSIE N. THOMPSON

TABOR CITY – Essie Mae Norris Thompson, 80, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at her home. She was born in Horry County, S.C., the daughter of the late Eddie and Florie Soles Norris.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 19 at Floral Gardens Memorial Park in High Point. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Roy I. Bolyard of Tabor City; three sons, Edward Fowler, Ned Fowler, and Beamon Fowler, all of Tabor City; a daughter, Jackie Lou Best of Walnut Cove; three sisters, Ruby Bodiford and Lula Long, both of Nakina; and Emma Ard of Thomasville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

 

MARTY L. BELLAMY

TABOR CITY – Marty Levon Bellamy, 49, died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital in Loris, S.C. He was the son of the late Robert B. Bellamy and Willie Mae Finick.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21 at Green Acres Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery in Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Marty Lorenzo Ray of Fayetteville, and Tymar Rouse of Little River, S.C.; and a adopted son, Joshua W. Bellamy of the home.

 

JOSHUA R. HUDSON

WINSTON - SALEM – Joshua Ray Hudson, 22, formerly of Dunn, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, in an auto accident. He was the son of the late Donald Ray and Marian Kay Hudson and the grandson of the late Wilbur M. Smith of Nakina.

He had a love for music. Hudson was a senior at the N.C. School of Arts where he was working on a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance and a major in music. He had received many awards in music and performance.

Final rites were held at the Skinner & Smith Funeral Home. Burial followed at Happy Home Church Cemetery in Nakina.

Survivors include a sister, Jennifer Hudson-Santos of Willow Spring; a brother, Johnathan Hudson of Palmyra, Pa. and grandmother, Esther Smith of Nakina.

LEVASSA ‘BAT’ WILSON
Mechanic

FAIRFIELD, Ohio – Levassa “Bat” Wilson, 77, formerly of Whiteville, died Friday, May 12, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Fairfield. He was a mechanic.

Final rites were held Wednesday, May 17 at Jerusalem Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Chadbourn with the Elder Fredrick Murray officiating. Burial followed in Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann of Florida, and Ella Mae of North Charleston, S.C.; three sons, Charles Wilson, and Gary Wilson, both of Charlotte, and Cleave Wilson of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Shirley Adams of Chadbourn, and Beatrice Whitehead of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Shirley Adams, 1620 Joe Brown Road, Chadbourn.

 

PERMELLA W. LEWIS

WHITEVILLE – Permella W. Lewis, 58, died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a Social Security claim representative.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Timothy A. Lance. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three sisters, Tabitha Blue of Dayton, Ohio, Blondell Hester of Whiteville, and Rev. Barbara Peacock of Charlotte; a brother, Rev. Darryl Lewis of Whiteville.

 HIRIAM J. CUTHRELL
Veteran

SALISBURY -- Hiram J. Cuthrell succumbed May 3, 2006 as a result of a stroke, which occurred on April 25.

Beloved husband of Mary E. Cuthrell, deceased 2004, cherished father of Lee Cuthrell Spada of Northridge, Calif., Hiram J. Cuthrell Jr. deceased 1991, and William V. Cuthrell of Louisville, Ky. and loving grandfather of Taylor, Eleanor, and Mary Cuthrell was a resident of Salisbury, for 32 years. A loving and caring brother to Rosa Lee Schwab, Margaret Hunt, and Allen Cuthrell all predeceased him.

Hiram Cuthrell was born in Belhaven on Sept. 6, 1917 and was a son of William Wilson Cuthrell and Rosa F. Lee Cuthrell. He was a graduate of Selma High School, Selma, and also Oak Ridge Military Institute with a two year degree in Business Administration. He served in the 11th Airborne Division in World War II and served in the occupying army of Japan. He later joined the N.C. National Guard in 1949 and ultimately retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

He worked in banking and was employed by Planters Bank of Rocky Mount, Waccamaw Bank of Whiteville, Branch Banking and Trust of Goldsboro, and Security Bank and Trust of Salisbury. He later worked for Rives Motor Company as credit manager. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Golden Rule Bible Class serving as one of the class teachers.

Cuthrell was a life member of The Retired Officer’s Association and was active in the Lions Club since joining in 1954. He had been a member of the Milford Hills Lions Club and was selected for the Melvin Jones Fellowship award, one of the highest awards in the Lions Club, in 1996.

He had the deepest faith in God, his family, his country, and his fellow man.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 21 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 217 South Church Street, Salisbury with Dr. Thomas L. Griffis officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the First United Methodist Church of Salisbury or Disabled Veterans.

CHADBOURN – Sarah Lee Benjamin, 80, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21 at Jerusalem Chapel Freewill Baptist Church by Vice Bishop Fredrick Murray. Burial will follow in the Belvue Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include five daughters, Betty McDowell, Leanna Thompson, and Marthella Benjamin, all of Chadbourn, Arlene Gerald and LaDonna K. Watson, both of Newtonville, N.J.; four sons, Percell Benjamin and Ronald Benjamin of Chadbourn, Johnnie Benjamin of Newtonville, N.C., and Dallas Benjamin of Landisville, N.J.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. and at the church Sunday following the service.

RALEIGH – Hubert Simmons, 87, formerly of Holden Beach, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Wake Medical Center.

DIANNE GIBSON WOODWARD

GREENVILLE -- Dianne Gibson Woodward, 64, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006.  A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. David Goehring at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church.

Woodward was born in Whiteville on Oct. 4, 1941.  She graduated from Whiteville High School in 1959 and from UNC-Greensboro in 1963 with a degree in education. She began her teaching career in Virginia Beach until 1967 when she returned to Whiteville until 1971.  Following the birth of her only child, she put her teaching career on hold for five years. She resumed teaching in Chocowinity in 1975.  While teaching in Chocowinity, she completed two master's degrees (in education and administration) at East Carolina University.  She returned to Whiteville in 1978 as an assistant principal and Director of Title I reading program for Whiteville City Schools.  In 1982, she moved to Myrtle Beach and resumed classroom teaching at Myrtle Beach Middle School until her retirement in 1995. She moved to Greenville in 2002 and for the past year was a resident at Spring Arbor.

Woodward loved education and felt fortunate to have had an impact in the lives of so many students. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, having moved from Myrtle Beach to Greenville to be closer to her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Baxter and Ruth Gibson; and husband, Dr. Kent T. Woodward.

She is survived by her son, Holt Humphreys and wife, Taylor, of Greenville; brothers, Sidney Gibson and his wife, Debra, of Whiteville, and Henry Gibson and his wife, Virginia, of Horn Lake, Miss.; a granddaughter, Lauren Taylor Humphreys of Greenville; grandsons, Grant and Hayden Humphreys of Greenville; a nephew, Billy Gibson of Raleigh; and cousin, Patsy Gaskin and husband, Tom, of Birmingham, Ala.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, 510 S. Washington St., Green-ville, N.C. 27834. Arrangements are by Wilkerson Funeral Home & Crematory.
