School boards
to see six seats open By FULLER ROYAL This summer, six incumbent school board members three in the city and three in the county must decide if they will run again. Their terms expire in the fall. Carlton Prince, serving his first term representing Whiteville District 1, is up for re-election, along with at-large member and current Board Chairman LaDeen Powell and Whiteville District 2 member Dave Flowers. Incumbents and challengers for those seats on the Whiteville City Schools Board of Education will have from July 10 until Aug. 14 to file. On the Columbus County Board of Education, District 2’s Bill Johnson, District 3’s Ricky Bullard and District 4’s Dale Ward all face the end of their current terms. All three are long-term veterans of the board. Bullard’s seat is up for grabs. He defeated David McPherson in this month’s primary for the Democrat nomination for the District 6 Columbus County Commission post and will not file for a new term on the board of education. Candidates for the county school board have from June 23 until Aug. 7 to file. The filing fee for a board of education seat is $61.z |
