LAKE WACCAMAW Etta Young McMillan, 69, Of the St. James community died Tuesday at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church with the Revs. Graylen Mitchell, Ronald Campbell and Norman Spaulding officiating. Interment will follow in the St. James Memorial Cemetery, Lake Waccamaw. Visitation will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.
She was the widow of Jack Bethea McMillan of Wallace and the daughter of the late James Melton and Carrie Lee Spaulding Young.
Surviving are two daughters, Jackie McMillan of Wallace and Merlene Crimmon of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Kevin McMillan and Anthony McMillan, both of Charleston, S.C.; sisters, Ottie Moore of Wilmington, Zadie Jacobs of Bolton and Retha Matthews of Lake Waccamaw; brothers, Oliver Young and Edgar Young, both of Lake Waccamaw; and 11 grandchildren.
RIEGELWOOD Raymond L. Brown, 77, of Riegelwood, died Thursday, May 25 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Mary Ann Williamson, 67, of 101 Green Street, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at her residence.
Born in Fair Bluff, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Green Strickland and Minnie Meares Strickland and wife of Grady Williamson. She was a graduate of Limestone College and Winthrop University. Williamson was a second grade teacher for the Cherokee County School Systems for more than 24 years.
In addition to her husband, also surviving are one son, Kenneth (Kent) Williamson and his wife, Theresa, of Greenville, S.C.; a daughter, Sherri Bowers and her husband, William, of Youngsville; three brothers, Franklin Strickland of Fairmont, Lloyd G. Strickland of Cerro Gordo, and William J. Strickland of Springfield, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Clayton Williamson and Anna Thompson. She was preceded in death by a brother, Gary T. Strickland.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 25 from 6-8 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home. Cryptside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 26 in Frederick Memorial Gardens conducted by Ashby Blakely and the Rev. Kathy Jones. Blakely Funeral Home, Gaffney, S.C. is handling the arrangements.

The family will be at the residence.
TABOR CITY Isadora Fowler, 83, died Sunday, May 21, 2006 in Loris Hospital. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Gurley G. and Lettie Fowler Fowler.
Final rites were held Wednesday, May 24 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Reverends Bobby Cartrette and Wilbur Fipps. Interment followed in the McPherson Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, W.C. “Cha” Fowler of Tabor City; a son, William Larry Fowler and wife Renea of Little River, S.C.; three daughters, Alice F. Porter and husband Levi Porter, Billie F. Lancaster, and Peggy A. Fowler, all of Tabor City; a sister, Merlin F. Fipps of Loris, S.C.; grandchildren, Jeffrey L. Porter and wife Kathy, Bridget Annadora Fowler, all of Little River, S.C.; Sharon LaCha Porter-Goff and husband Kim of Loris, S.C., William Joseph Lancaster of Nichols, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Edith Lauren Porter of Little River, S.C., and Jeffrey Lance Porter of Charleston, S.C.; nephews, Michael Glenn Fowler of Tabor City, and Mickey Ray Cartrette of Archdale; special friend, Marjorie Tyler.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Gleon Pete Fowler.

TABOR CITY William Edward “Buddy Love” Hemingway Sr., 52, died Monday, May 16, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late Julia H. and Lewis McClure.
Final rites were held Monday, May 22 at Great Grace Church in Tabor City with Bishop Anthony Gerald Sr. delivering the eulogy. Burial followed in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Evangelist Brenda Hickman Hemingway, a son William E. Hemingway Jr.; three daughters, Angela, Shanda, and France Hickman; seven sisters and three brothers.

WHITEVILLE Louise Tillman Fowler, 58, died Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a restaurant worker.

Survivors include her husband, Wesley “Skippy” Fowler of the home, and one son, Gregory Tillman of Thomasville, Ga.
JERSEY CITY, N.J. Mattie Mae Faulk, 92, formerly of Chadbourn, died Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Jersey City Medical Center.

CHADBOURN Carlene B. Vereen, 88, died Monday, May 22, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a homemaker.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 27 at Zion Wall Freewill Baptist Church by Elder Wendell Gore. Burial will follow in the Belvue Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Gladys Huggins and Barbara Campbell of Chadbourn; and a sister, Luberta Evans of Detroit, Mich.
Viewing will be at the funeral home on Friday from noon to 8 p.m. Viewing will also be at the church Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.
CHAPEL HILL -- Miden Broaddus Higgins died on Thursday, May 18, 2006, at the age of 89. She was born on Aug. 10, 1916 in St. Joseph, Mo. to the late Mr. and Mrs. John W. Broaddus. Mr. Broaddus was president of American National Bank of Missouri and director of the Federal Reserve System.
Miden spent her formative years in St. Joseph, Mo. and Honolulu, Hawaii. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in New York City. After graduation, she became a model in New York where she worked until she met her future husband, Thomas Dupree Higgins Jr., who was serving as a pilot in the United States Air Corp. during World War II.
She and Tom were married on Jan. 24, 1945, following his service in the Air Corp. and at the beginning of his career with Sun Oil Company. They embarked on married life, moving around the country, making many special friends. Together, Miden and Tom spent the majority of their time in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia where the Sun Oil Company had dual corporate headquarters. During all of her moves, she managed to find the time to become an officer in the Junior League, maintain an active membership in the Women’s Exchange, and serve on many charitable boards.
She moved to Chapel Hill in 1988 to enjoy retirement and be close to her children and grandchildren. She was an avid golfer and a long time member of the Chapel Hill Country Club where she was a member of several golf leagues: the Eighteen Holers and the Nifty Niners, playing golf until the age of 88. She and her husband moved to The Cedars in 2004, and her husband predeceased her on Jan. 27, 2006. Miden, or "Mimi" as her children and grandchildren called her, was loved dearly by family and her many friends throughout the country.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Dupree Higgins III and his wife Eva of Chapel Hill; her daughter, Miden Higgins Meares and her husband, Carl of Fair Bluff; three grandchildren, Amy Higgins Hodges and her husband Dempsey of Raleigh, Carl Whitten Meares III of Fair Bluff, and Taylor Brandeau Higgins of Atlanta; and her great-granddaughter, the light of her life, Margaret Stewart Hodges, who was born on Feb. 5, 2006.
A memorial service was held at the ballroom of The Cedars Club House on Saturday May 20 at 3 p.m. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff announced the arrangements.

DR. MAURICE B. RICHARDSON
NEWPORT -- Dr. Maurice Baker Richardson, 78, died Friday, May 5, 2006 at Century Care Nursing Home in Morehead City.
He was born in Whiteville, son of the late Bruce A.
and Margaret Simmons Richardson. He joined the U.S. Navy upon graduating from Whiteville High School and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal in 1947. He earned a degree in chemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill where he later earned his doctorate in dentistry and oral surgery. He practiced in Albemarle, served on the school board and was president of N.C. Dental Society of Dentistry for Children. He was among the first dentists to study and successfully reattach and restore teeth broken as a result of traumatic injury. He retired in 1982 and moved to the Crystal Coast where he enjoyed growing plants, became a Master Gardener, and was recently honored by the N.C. Master Gardener Association for outstanding service for 22 years.
His first wife Jane died in 1996 and he later married Nancy Krajenski, who survives, along with a daughter, Laura Jane Price of Newport; a son, Randall Baker Richardson of Clearwater, Fla.; step-children, Jane Fugler of Ormand Beach, Fla. and Stephen Krajenski of San Francisco, Calif.; three grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
Dr. Richardson was the last surviving member of his birth family. He was preceded in death by brothers Bruce, Hollis, and Billy Wayne Richardson, and sister Lucy R. Leggett.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 20 at the First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City where he was a member. Memorials may be made to support ongoing research and treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a disease that claimed the life of all of Dr. Richardson’s birth family and now threatens the next generation: The Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, Suite F, #227, 1659 Branham Lane, San Jose, Calif. 95118-5226.
WESTBURY, N.Y. Charles Andrew Reid, 36, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Northshore Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 26 at Townsend Temple Memorial Gardens in Bolton. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Annette Ryans Reid; a son, Stephen Chichester of Westbury, N.Y.; his mother, Cynthia Reid of Richmond, Va.; and a sister, Charlene Reid of Richmond, Va.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Thursday, May 25 from noon to 8 p.m.
PAUL RESTON BYRD
Veteran, retired from U.S. Forest Service
HALLSBORO Paul Reston Byrd, 83, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 23, 2006. He died at home with his loving family. He was a loving husband, daddy and granddaddy. His family loved him very much. He was born Sept. 4, 1922 in Columbus County, a son of the late Stedman and Adeline Tedder Byrd, he was the youngest of nine children.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-1945.
He was a scout for his unit serving under General Patton. He was in the 90th Division of Patton’s 3rd Army and landed in Normandy on “D” Day in the second wave. Reston was captured by the German army in France and was a WWII prisoner of war from 1944-1945.
After serving our country, Reston farmed and then worked for J.T. Lee & Sons Gas Co. of Wilmington before becoming a mechanic with the N.C. Forestry Service. He retired from the forestry service-District 8-Whiteville in 1981. He was a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Elsie Batten Byrd of Hallsboro on Dec. 23, 2005.
Survivors include a son, Roger Byrd and his wife, Janice of Lake Waccamaw; two daughters, Pam and her husband, Lonnie Lee of New Britton Hwy.; and Judy and her husband, Richard Young of Hallsboro; five grandchildren, Paula Byrd Garrell and husband, Bob, Ricky Young and wife Melissa, Chester Byrd and wife Glenda, Brandon Young and Corey Lee; six great-grandchildren, Matthew Byrd, Heath Byrd, Hannah Garrell, Harlee Byrd, Brett Young and Taylor Young; a sister, Thelma Lewis of Currie.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Geraldine Bullard, Stella Riley, Margaret Reeves, Myrl Byrd and three brothers, Alonza Byrd, William Byrd and Rev. Woodrow Byrd.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 26 at Hallsboro Baptist Church with the Reverends Dallas Byrd and Ralph Gore officiating. Burial will follow in Flynn Cemetery. McKenzie Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 25 at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m.
Active pallbearers will be C.Y. Powell Jr., Gary Powell, Jerome Powell, Robert Powell, Joe Powell, and Lewis Powell.
The family will receive friends at the home of Reston and Elsie Byrd at 1361 Hallsboro Road North, Whiteville.
