Pause to
remember
fallen at 3 p.m.

IFreedom does not -- and has not -- come cheaply for the people of the world.

Americans often take for granted their freedoms, won through the blood and courage first by the patriots of the Revolutionary War and followed by the thousands who have died defending our freedoms over the generations.

While Memorial Day has been a day of honor and celebration since 1868, people should not forget the Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m., signed by President Bill Clinton in 2000. It asks that Americans remember the country’s fallen heroes at 3 p.m. every Memorial Day with a minute of silence.

Today, Americans should especially remember our servicewomen and servicemen who are fighting difficult battles in Iraq and Afghanistan. Daily, they are surrounded by danger. Many won’t come home alive. It is a sobering thought, especially for those who have sons and daughters in battle zones.

In addition to a moment of silence for those who have fallen in previous wars, a prayer for the safety of those on the ground, on the water and in the air over Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas, seems appropriate as well.
