An Army honor guard salutes as the family of Paul Reston Byrd, who during World War II fought on Normandy Beach and was later a prisoner of war, passes by. Byrd was laid to rest with full military honors Friday at Flynn Cemetery east of Whiteville. Today, America honors those who, like Byrd, served to protect the hard-won freedoms that Americans enjoy today.
