OBITUARIES

PAUL RESTON BYRD
Veteran, retired from U.S. Forest Service

HALLSBORO - Paul Reston Byrd, 83, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 23, 2006. He died at home with his loving family. He was a loving husband, daddy and granddaddy. His family loved him very much. He was born Sept. 4, 1922 in Columbus County, a son of the late Stedman and Adeline Tedder Byrd, he was the youngest of nine children.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-1945.

He was a scout for his unit serving under General Patton. He was in the 90th Division of Patton's 3rd Army and landed in Normandy on "D" Day in the second wave. Reston was captured by the German army in France and was a WWII prisoner of war from 1944-1945.

After serving our country, Reston farmed and then worked for J.T. Lee & Sons Gas Co. of Wilmington before becoming a mechanic with the N.C. Forestry Service. He retired from the forestry service-District 8-Whiteville in 1981. He was a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wards, and a deacon.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Elsie Batten Byrd of Hallsboro on Dec. 23, 2005.

Survivors include a son, Roger Byrd and his wife, Janice of Lake Waccamaw; two daughters, Pam and her husband, Lonnie Lee of New Britton Hwy. ; and Judy and her husband, Richard Young of Hallsboro; five grandchildren, Paula Byrd Garrell and husband, Bob, Ricky Young and wife Melissa, Chester Byrd and wife Glenda, Brandon Young and Corey Lee; six great-grandchildren, Matthew Byrd, Heath Byrd, Hannah Garrell, Harlee Byrd, Brett Young and Taylor Young; a sister, Thelma Lewis of Currie.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Geraldine Bullard, Stella Riley, Margaret Reeves, Myrl Byrd and three brothers, Alonza Byrd, William Byrd and Rev. Woodrow Byrd.

Final rites were held at Friday, May 26 at Hallsboro Baptist Church with the Reverends Dallas Byrd and Ralph Gore officiating. Burial followed in Flynn Cemetery. McKenzie Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Active pallbearers were C.Y. Powell Jr., Gary Powell, Jerome Powell, Robert Powell, Joe Powell, and Lewis Powell.

The family will receive friends at the home of Reston and Elsie Byrd at 1361 Hallsboro Road North, Whiteville.

 

KENNETH W. CARLTON

ELIZABETHTOWN - Kenneth Wayne Carlton, 39, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of Lessie Carlton of Graham and the late Raymond Jeffery Carlton. He was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Johnson.

Graveside services were held Sunday, May 28 in Siler City at the Meroney Church Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors other than his mother include five brothers, Bobby Ray Carlton, Lonnie Ranson Carlton, Roger Lee Carlton, Harold G. Carlton, and Charles Frazier Carlton; three sisters, Mary Taylor of Bladenboro, Suzanne Hales and JoAnne Gaddis, both of Siler City.

 

FRANK A. JULIAN
Veteran

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Frank Anthony Julian, 79, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at Conway Medical Center in Conway, S.C. He was born in West Virginia, the son of the late Tony and Mary Bruno Julian.

He was a veteran of the United States Marines.

A memorial service was held Sunday, May 28 at Inman Chapel, conducted by the Reverends George Smith and Adolph Smith. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Amanda L. Julian of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sons, Tony Julian and Richard Julian, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Janice L. Julian of Tabor City, and Erica Dawn Julian of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Angeline Haught of Florida; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

RAYMOND L. BROWN
Factory worker

RIEGELWOOD - Raymond L. Brown, 77, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington. He was a factory worker.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 29 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Sandyfield. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Betty C. Brown; four daughters, Sylena Cooper of Bolton, Naomi Miller of Riegelwood, Lenora Webb of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Victoria Brown-Moffett of Augusta, Ga.; three sons, Jeffery Ballard of Charlotte, Gregory Brown of Riegelwood, and Ray Brown of Wilmington; three sisters, Vernice Brown Johnson of Pensacola, Fla., Ethel McCullen of Durham, and Celeste Bateman of Springfield, Mass.; three brothers, Lloyd Brown and Foster Brown of Riegelwood, and Walter Lee Brown of Springfield, Mass.

Viewing will be at the church Monday from 1:30-2 p.m. and again following the service.

 

MATTIE MAE FAULK

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Mattie Mae Faulk, 92, formerly of Chadbourn, died Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Jersey City Medical Center.

Final rites were held Saturday, May 27 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chadbourn. Burial followed in the Belvue Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Hestella Faulk and Josephine Faulk George of Jersey City, N.J.; four sons, Robert Faulk of Jersey City, N.J., Joe C. Faulk of Marion, S.C., Melvin Faulk of Chadbourn, and Ernest Faulk of Lumberton.

 

LULA JANE NELSON

TABOR CITY - Lula Jane Nelson, 77, died Monday, May 22, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital in Loris, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Promise and Mae Bell Johnson.

Final rites were held Saturday, May 27 at Mitchell Sea Missionary Baptist Church in Green Sea, S.C. with the Rev. Vanzie L. Vereen officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell Sea Cemetery. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

She is survived by her sister, Mae Elizabeth Toomer of Conway, S.C.

 

LOTTIE B. RAWLS

CHADBOURN - Lottie Buffkin Rawls, 90, died Saturday, May 27, 2006 at Shoreland Healthcare in Whiteville.

Rawls was the daughter of the late Marion S. and Helen Mills Buffkin and the step-daughter of the late Wanneda Buffkin Dudley. She was the widow of the late James Mitchell Rawls. She was predeceased by two brothers, Willard Buffkin and Everette Buffkin.

She was a member of Chadbourn Baptist Church and the Chadbourn Chapter of the Eastern Star. She retired from Collins Department Store in Chadbourn.

Graveside services were held Monday, May 29 at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Sean Roberds officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two nieces, Sharron Floyd and her husband, John of Lugoff, S.C. and Calista Buffkin of Florence, S.C.; a nephew, Willard Buffkin and his wife, Beverly of Carolina Beach; two great-nieces, Lindsey and Page Buffkin of Carolina Beach; a sister-in-law, Sadie Long Buffkin of Florence, S.C.; and dear friends, Tucker and Jimmie Sue Ward of Chadbourn.

The family would like to thank the staff at Shoreland Healthcare and Retirement Center for all the compassion and care given to Rawls  during her stay with them.

JERRY LEE MITCHELL

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Jerry Lee Mitchell, 61, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 in New York. He was the husband of Doris Boone Mitchell, formerly of Hallsboro.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

 

JAMES R. HAYNES

BRONX, N.Y. - James Russell Haynes, 72, formerly of Whiteville, died Friday, May 26, 2006 at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, N.Y.
