Whiteville Post 137 kicked off to a slow start during the weekend to kick off this year’s American Legion season.

The team dropped last Wednesday’s game against Hope Mills and spit a doubleheader Saturday with Brunswick County Post 68.

Scores for Sunday night’s away game against Post 10 were unavailable at press time.

The team kicked off the season with a 12-4 loss to visiting Hope Mills. Corey Blackwell was the losing pitcher for Post 137.

The team racked up seven hits. Justin Creech went 2-for-4 and Jeremy King hit a double in the loss.

Addison Miller, Quan Gaddy, Marquis Smith and Robbie Penny also had hits for Whiteville.

Saturday’s doubleheader against visiting Post 68 provided an ample amount of excitement, however.

In Game 1, Whiteville lost 7-6 off a game-winning hit in the seventh inning by Post 68’s Dustin Medlin.

Donavan Watts and Ben Deans each had two hits in the loss. Deans, Marquis Smith and Charlie Gore all hit doubles.

Post 68’s Justin Crowl earned the win. Post 137’s Justin Creech was credited with the loss.

Game 2 ended more smoothly for Post 137, which cruised to a 5-3 win.

Post 137’s Jordan McPherson launched a two-run homer over the centerfield wall in the fourth inning. McPherson went 2-for-4 in the game.

Also hitting for Post 137 were Dustin Proctor, Ben Deans, Marquis Smith and Donavan Watts.

Pitcher Robbie Penny earned the win. Chris Russell was credited with the save.

Post 137 next plays Tuesday at Hamlet. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.

After that, the team will play home games Wednesday and Thursday against Fayetteville Post 4 and Pleasure Island, respectively.
