S. Brunswick cops fifth straight Waccamaw Conference golf title
OAK ISLAND With its sights set firmly on the 2006 state 2A championship, the unbeaten South Brunswick High golf team put the finishing touches on its fifth straight Waccamaw Conference championship by dominating Monday’s conference tournament at Oak Island Golf Club. With David Register and Matt Pierce tying for medalist honors with individual scores of 77, Coach Gene Doane’s Cougars posted a team total 319 to finish well ahead of Whiteville’s 364. South Columbus came in third in the tournament with a 374. East Columbus and Pender rounded out the field. South Brunswick and South Columbus each qualified teams in next Monday’s East Regional 2A Golf Tournament at Cape Carteret while East Columbus qualified as a team for next Monday’s East Regional 1A Golf Tournament at Ayden. South Columbus, which earned team qualification in the East Regional by placing runnerup in overall tournament play, consists of Mike Hewitt, Mark Alan Wright, W.T. Edwards, John Paul Rogers, John Jones and Dylan Newman. Whiteville High players, qualifying individually for 2A regional play are Donald Viets, Brent Coleman, Nick Williamson and David Hodgson. East Columbus team members headed to the 1A regional are Matt Robinson, Sean Merrick, Chris Manning, Justin Wayne, Peter Peterson, Robert Sowers.
