TOMMY JAMES ‘BIRD’ JEFFERIES

WHITEVILLE Tommy James “Bird” Jefferies, 48, died Thursday, May 4, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was a former hospital orderly.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 11 at First St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. S.E. Bryant. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Community Cemetery. Peoples Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include seven sisters, Carrie Graham of Clarkton, Betty Blanks of Wilmington, Barbara Piggott of Chadbourn, Essie Stone of Cheverly, Md., Nellie Smith of Forrestville, Md., Elouise Bright and Betty Jeffries, both of Whiteville; four brothers, Nathaniel Smith of Castle Hayne, James Smith of Colonial Beach, Va., James Russell Jeffries of Whiteville, and Willie Truman Jeffries of New York.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Thursday following the service. There will be a wake Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Friends may visit the family at the home of Carrie Graham, 211 Plum Street, Clarkton.
ELIZABETH McLELLAND MAXWELL
AUTRYVILLE Elizabeth “Betty Joe” McLelland Maxwell, 68, died Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. She was the daughter of Grace J. McLelland and the late Joel L. McLelland of Cerro Gordo.
Final rites were held Wednesday, May 4 at Evergreen Baptist Church with the Reverends Jerry Fisher, Roger White, and Tommy Honeycutt. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Butler Funeral Home in Stedman handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her sons, Robert Johnson, Tracy Maxwell and Robert Maxwell; three daughters, Julia Gibson, Linda Sanderson, and Denise Jones; her mother, Grace McLelland; three sisters, Linda Floyd, Mary Nance and Sue Turner; a brother, Joel McLelland; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
ELIZABETH ‘BIRDIE’ WILLIAMS BURNS
RIEGELWOOD Elizabeth “Birdie” Williams burns, 88, went to be with her Lord on Friday morning May 5, 2006 with her husband by her side.
Burns was born Oct. 24, 1917 in Acme, the daughter of the late Thomas H. Williams Sr. and Maggie Hall Williams. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas H. Williams Jr., and three sisters, Alice Williams Alford, Rachel (Bunk) Medlin, and Barbara (Robbie) McQuay.
She was known by family and friends as Birdie and to her grandchildren she was Meemaw. Birdie and Al grew up together as childhood playmates and have been married for 66 years. She attended Women’s College in Greensboro with her twin sister, Alice. She and Al ran the family business and helped in the raising of the Williams’ sisters. She always took great joy in time spent with her grandchildren. She took pleasure in tending to her garden and potted plants as well as picking out pecans. She enjoyed watching sports, and her favorite television shows were Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 8 at the Acme Presbyterian Church by the Reverends Hannah Vaughan and Jonathan Kelley. The family will receive friends before the service from 1-3 p.m. and burial will be at the Weyman Cemetery following the service. Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband Allison (Al) Otway Burns; two sons, Thomas (Tom) Allison Burns and William (Billy) Otway Burns and wife, Kelly and grandchildren Margaret (Maggie) and Meredith, and daughter, Dru Burns Long and husband Gurney and grandchildren, Ashley and Jon; three sisters, Lillian (Pink) Buie and husband Joe Buie, Betty Jackson and Miriam (Mazie) Griffith, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Weyman Cemetery Fund, 4627 Old Stage Highway, Riegelwood, N.C. 28456 or charity of choice.
THOMAS E. BAILEY
Retired farmer and hotel owner/operator
NICHOLS, S.C. Thomas Ernest “Tommy” Bailey, 64, of the Spring Branch community, died Saturday, May 6, 2006 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C. He was the son of Ernestine P. Bailey of Loris, S.C. and the late Ernest E. Bailey.
Bailey was a retired farmer and hotel owner/operator. He was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church in Nichols.
Final rites will be held at 4 p.m Monday, May 8 at Spring Branch Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Mullins, S.C. is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Enzor Bailey of Nichols, S.C.; two daughters, Tammy B. Prince and Terri B. Causey, both of Loris, S.C.; four stepchildren, Carol D. Caulder, Tonya D. Chapman, both of Irmo, S.C., Donna D. Hunter of Columbia, S.C., and Gary Wayne Todd of Greer, S.C.; four grandchildren, and 10 step-grandchildren.

ELIZABETHTOWN Alice S. Clark, 77, died Friday, May 5, 2006 at her residence.
A private burial will be held at Elizabethtown Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the service.
Survivors include her son, Buck Clark of White Lake; a daughter, Lisa Clark Cauble of Winston Salem; a brother, Ed B. Sisson of China Grove, and sister, Ann S. Stennet of Boise, Idaho.
She was predeceased by her husband T.J. “Tommy” Clark, and sons, Jeff Clark and Jay Clark.

WHITEVILLE Roosevelt Lewis, 74, of the Crusoe community died Friday, May 5, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late James “Jimmy” Washington and Belle Register Lewis, and the husband of the late Maxine Watts Lewis.
Final rites were held Sunday, May 7 at Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Clayton Rivenbark officiating. Burial followed in the Evans Cemetery in Whiteville. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
He is survived by a sister, Magaline Lewis Etheridge of the home; a niece, Carolyn Sayre and her husband, Lawrence of Whiteville; two nephews, Jeff Etheridge and his wife, Teresa and Ervin Etheridge and his wife, Sandra, both of Whiteville.

CHADBOURN Ralph Mack Brown Jr., 49, died Sunday, April 30, 2006. A memorial services will be held at a later date.
He is survived by sons, Scottie Mack Brown and Shane Brown, both of Chdabourn; two daughters, Nicole Brown Worley and Karen Brown, both of Whiteville; two sisters, Wanda Johnson of Whiteville, and Rhonda Harrelson of Longs, S.C.; two half-brothers, Danny Brown, and Billy Brown, and a half-sister, Sharon Brown, all of Chadbourn.

TABOR CITY Deterris Antwie Stevenson, 16, died Saturday, May 6, 2006 at UNC-Chapel Hill hospital. He died waiting for a liver transplant.
Arrangements will be announced by Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City.
BOLTON Addie “Sue” Blanks Graham died Saturday, May 6, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 11 at St. Paul AME Zion Church in Freeman with the Rev. Morris Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Restwell #1 at Bolton. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her children, Mary Jane Graham of Freeman, Frances Graham Avery of Raleigh, Collins William Graham and Von Thomas Webb, both of Riegelwood, Carolyn Graham Cromartie of Kelly.
Viewing will be one hour prior to serve and after the service.
WHITEVILLE Eula Grey Long Register, 80, died Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Walter Emerson Long and Evie Lula Jones Long.
Graveside services were held Friday, May 5 at the Register Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Lyles officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Bruhilda Stocks of Tabor City, and Sue Clewis of Whiteville; a sister, Estleen Faulk of Nakina; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grand-children.
