WHS to make trip
to Manteo for opener

The Whiteville High girls soccer team is scheduled to depart today for Roanoke Island where it will square off with Manteo High on Tuesday at 6 p.m., in the opening round of the state 1A-2A playoffs.

It will mark the first-ever state playoff game for the WHS girls soccer team, which is coming off a third-place finish in the Waccamaw/Southeastern 1A-2A Conference. Coach Mike Buckpitt’s Lady Wolfpack has a 9-10-1 season record, which includes an 8-4 conference record.

South Brunswick won the Waccamaw Conference championship with North Brunswick finishing second.

“It’s a long trip and Manteo has a traditionally strong program, but we hope we can make a good showing,” Buckpitt said. “Our girls have worked really hard and have improved considerably from the start of the season.”

Manteo finished runnerup in the Albemarle/Northeast Coastal 1A-2A Conference.

WHS has been led by the one-two scoring punch of junior Mary Kindschuh and sophomore Sarah Gore. Gore has tallied 21 goals this season with Kindschuh right behind with 20. Junior goalkeeper Katie Bastug has had several solid outings, including 21 saves in the Lady Wolfpack’s final regular-season game with South Brunswick.

Other team members are Brittany Batten, Yanath Beltran, Mary Ellen Davis, Brandi Drayton, Leslie Frink, Brystol Gore, Devin Gore, Gail Hammon, Chelsea Hinnant, Casey Horne, Hillary Kindschuh, Kayla Little, Anne Powell, Bryanna Ray, Lindy Sellars and Michelle Turner.
