North Brunswick sweeps
Waccamaw track titles

EC’s Young, Whiteville’s Turner gain individual honors

ROCKY POINT – To the surprise of absolutely no one, the North Brunswick High School boys and girls teams ran to their respective Waccamaw 1A-2A track and field championships last Wednesday at the Heide Trask High School track.

The North Brunswick boys team claimed 12 first places and 227 points to dominate its division. Trask took second place with 111.5 points, followed by South Brunswick with 99. Pender with 72, Whiteville with 56.5, South Columbus with 23 and East Columbus with 21.

The North Brunswick boys team won the state 1A track and field title last spring and is expected to make a strong run that this year’s 2A title.

The North Brunswick girls took first place with 137 points and South Brunswick came in second with 103. The Whiteville girls grabbed third place with 90 points, followed by East Columbus with 76, Pender with 67, South Columbus with 55 and Trask with 35.

East Columbus’ Jasmine Young - whose highlight performance of the day was a 16 feet, 3-inch first-place effort in the long jump - was named the top overall performer of the girls meet. Whiteville’s Michelle Turner was co-winner for the top performer in the field events boosted by her 31 feet, 7 inch first place finish in the triple jump.

The East Columbus girls also got a first places from Resheia Baldwin in the 200 meter dash (26.34) and Jasma Miles in the 100-meter hurdles (17.0). The Whiteville girls also got a first place finish by Marquita Campbell with a 91 feet, 3 inch throw in the discus.

Whiteville’s Alex Royal took first place in the boys high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches.
