APEX -- H. Carey Caines, 56, on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 6:20 p.m. stepped into glory and met his Savior, Jesus Christ. Carey had fought the good fight for many years battling heart disease and Pick’s disease.
Carey grew up in Chadbourn, with seven brothers, Richard Caines III of Wilmington, Charles Caines, Edward Caines, Wade Caines, Wesley Caines, and Elton Caines of Chadbourn. Carey was preceded in death by his late brother George Caines and parents; William Richard (Dickie) Caines Jr. and Hazel Mae Caines.
Carey and his wife Freda Page Caines moved to Raleigh in 1978, for Carey to attend North Carolina State University. He was pursuing an Animal Science degree. Carey worked for many years at Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant and later with the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. In his younger years, he served his country during the Vietnam War as a medic.
Carey had a great love for children and enjoyed working at church in AWANA. He enjoyed tutoring and encouraging children at schools where Freda taught, Wake Christian Academy, Wilson’s Mills Elementary, and Cleveland Elementary.
Carey loved his family, especially his children, David and Georgia C. McLean of Holly Springs, and Eric and Crystal Caines of Greenville. He was blessed to have enjoyed his four precious granddaughters, Ciara Mary Caines and Laila Catherine Caines of Greenville and Elizabeth Rose McLean and Abigail Sarah-Hope McLean of Holly Springs. He is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank the medical community that has served Carey so well over the years, our church family, school families, friends, Total Life Care Center, Hospice of Wake County, and Cary Health and Rehab where he recently resided.
Carey’s Homegoing Party was held Thursday, Nov. 9 at 11:30 a.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh. Montlawn Funeral Home of Raleigh handled the arrangements.

FAIR BLUFF -- Harry Lee Strickland, 72, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

EFFINGHAM, S.C. -- Robert Dewey Hooks Sr., 77, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, in a local hospital after a brief illness.
Hooks was born in Columbus County, a son of the late Clyde and Naomi Spivey Hooks. He retired as a Captain with the Florence County Detention Center after 20 years of service. He was formerly employed as a composer for The State Newspaper in Columbia, S.C. He was a member of the Baptist faith.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel, Florence, S.C. The committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery in Chadbourn. Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence, S.C. is handling the arrangements.
Survivors included by his longtime companion, Janice E. McLelland of the home; a daughter, Janet H. (Tyler) Callihan of Raleigh; two sons, Robert D. (Wanda) Hooks Jr. of Effingham, S.C., and Robert Barry Hooks of California; two brothers, Carroll E. Hooks and Bruce Hooks, both of Monroe; five grandchldren, Robbie Hooks of Hamlet, Bree Johnson of Chadbourn, Keith Johnson of Raleigh, Dustin Hooks, and Kasey Hooks, both of Effingham, S.C.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday (tonight) at the funeral home.
WHITEVILLE -- Frances Ann Carteret, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006. She was born April 23, 1926 in Baltimore, Md., the daughter of the late John and Grace Andresini. She was the widow of Lacy Daniel Carteret.
She attended Sunday School at Madison Hill Apartments, Trinity Baptist Church, and Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church. She was a former member of Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post #10226 at Long Beach.
Final rites were held Sunday, Nov. 12 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Reverends Buster Benton, and Frank Turner. Interment followed in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock’s Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Robert Joseph Carteret of Long Beach; three daughters, Geraldine C. Cartret of Whiteville, Patricia C. Roscoe of Boiling Spring Lakes, and Mary C. Horne of Whiteville; a brother, Joseph B. Andresini of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Anti A. Franklin Jr. of Baltimore, Md., Mary A. Cheslak of Wanitagh, N.Y. and Jean A. Watts of Baltimore, Md.;11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jerry W. Carteret and a grandson.
BLADENBORO -- Philip E. Johnson, 87, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Evelyn B. Johnson.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Merle Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Lewis Funeral Home of Bladenboro is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include four daughters, Ann Ozlin and Etta Smith, both of Bladenboro, Brenda Freeman of White Oak, and Faye Alexander of Stockbridge, Ga.; a brother, Ben Johnson of Elizabethtown; seven grandchldren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday,, Nov. 14 from 7-9 p.m.

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Sarah McLean Thomson, 87, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006 at her residence. She was born on Aug. 22, 1919 in Washington, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Harry Herndon McLean and Ruby Stilley McLean. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Harry H. McLean III who died in 1992.
Thomson graduated from Washington High School as Valedictorian of her 100 member class. She attended Peace College in 1937-38. Sarah attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1940 where she was voted one of the Top Ten Outstanding coeds. In Washington she was a charter member of the DeMille Book Club, a member of the DAR, and served on the board of directors for the Depot Museum at Lake Waccamaw. She received an honorary life membership from the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Women of the Church.
Final rites were held Monday, Nov. 13, at Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sommer Bower officiating. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Stuart McGuire Thomson of the home; a daughter, Sarah Thomson High of Lake Waccamaw; a son, Stuart M. Thomson Jr. of Washington; and grandchildren, Elizabeth High and Sarah Ashlin High Pleming.
Memorials may be made to the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church.
WHITEVILLE -- Joseph Mark Ward, 44, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville. He was born Oct. 14, 1962 in Columbus County, the son of Barbara Child Ward and the late Earl Eugene Ward. He formerly was employed with Millwork Specialties of Whiteville.
Graveside service was conduced Sunday, Nov. 12, at Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park by the Reverends Steven Bailey and Danny Williams. Peacock’s Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Wright Ward; a son, Zachary Eugene Ward of Easley, S.C.; a daughter, Nicole Ward Kersey of Easely, S.C.; a brother, Earl E. Ward Jr. of Spartanburg, S.C.; two sisters, Jennifer L. Ward of Wilmington, and Kim W. Theodorakis of Wilmington.
WHITEVILLE -- Vadie Boswell Dew Bass died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

ELIZABETHTOWN -- David L. Hildreth, 61, formerly of Anson County, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was predeceased by his parents, W.L. Hildreth Jr. and Irene Hildreth; and a brother, Louis Hildreth.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at Bladen Funeral Home with the Reverends Bill Altman and Jerry Greene officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

WHITEVILLE -- Mazzalee Thurston Sanderford, 91, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at the Summit Place of North Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was the daughter of the late John Lonsdale Thurston and Birdie Snell Thurston.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert R. (Andy) Sanderford.
Sanderford was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Whiteville.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15 at the First Presbyterian Church in Whiteville with the Rev. Josh Bower officiating with burial following in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Gail Sanderford Church of Ocean Isle Beach; a niece, Kay Thurston Pope of Whiteville; and a nephew, Kenneth Thurston of Whiteville.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 14 at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m.

TABOR CITY -- Oda Mae Fowler Hardee, 95, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, in Loris Healthcare, Loris, S.C. She was the widow of John Jesse Hardee. Born in Horry County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Sampson Fowler and Cummie Tilatha Jane Fowler Fowler.
Final rites were held Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Inman Chapel, conducted by Dr. David Coleman with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
WHITEVILLE -- Hattie P. Gaskins, 85, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at her residence. She was a homemaker.

WHITEVILLE -- Rebecca Cartret, 88, died Friday Nov. 10, 2006 at Premier Living, Lake Waccamaw. She was the widow of Cleveland McCoy Cartret. Born in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Porter Monroe McPherson and Ella Cribb McPherson.
Final rites were held Saturday, Nov. 11 at Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jackie Godwin. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Carlton Monroe Cartrette of Whiteville, and Loyd Cartret of Chadbourn; two sisters, Vera McPherson of Chadbourn, and Rachel Lane of Arizona.

FAIR BLUFF -- Pauline Davis Meares, 74 of Fair Bluff died Thursday at her home.
Meares was a member of Hinson’s Crossroads Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband Gordon Lee Meares.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Hinson’s Crossroads Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Swaringen officiated. Burial followed in the Meares Family Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.
Surviving are two sons, Johnny Robert Meares of Clarkton, and Carson Lee Meares of Fair Bluff; a daughter, Ann M. Griffin of Fair Bluff; a stepson, Larry Strickland of Bristol Tenn.; and a sister Mabel Arnette of Fayetteville and eight grandchildren.
