Elkin defeats Vikes in 1A opener

ELKIN - The defending state 1A champion Elkin Buckin’ Elks jumped to a quick 20-0 lead Friday night en route to a 48-13 victory over the visiting West Columbus Vikings in the opening round of the West 1A bracket of the state high-school football playoffs.

West Columbus scored both its touchdowns in the first half on a 20-yard pass from Timothy Brown to Tyrale George and on a one-yard run by Travis Leggett.

Brown completed seven of seven passes for 97 yards while Leggett had 22 carries for 93 yards.

West Columbus closed its season with a 2-10 record that included a 1-6 mark in the Southeastern 1A-2A Conference.

“We made some position changes to try to start getting things geared for next year,” said WCHS head coach Vernon Brigman, who went through a rebuilding year this fall after the Vikings posted an 8-5 record last season. “We’re looking to be a much improved team next season.”

Coach Richard Grissom’s Elkin squad, vying for its third state championship in four years, has an 9-3 record.
