Demolished
house is good
start on code
enforcement

It’s been a long time coming, but the “poster house” for code enforcement is now gone.

Crews recently demolished the old Waccamaw Academy building at the corner of Columbus and Franklin streets.

The house is symbolic of the effort needed in the city to tear down several dilapidated structures, many of which made The News Reporter’s “Eyesore of the Week” last year.

Code enforcement is crucial for Whiteville and other county municipalities. It’s a quality of life issue, among many others.

For instance, dilapidated buildings are not only a health hazard, but they often serve as crack houses and are blights on entire neighborhoods. One bad house can undo the work of many homeowners who go to great lengths to make sure their properties are well-kept. Such is the case on Franklin Street, where several houses have been restored in recent years.

Kudos to Whiteville City Council for funding the tear-down of other dilapidated structures in the city. Your work has just begun, however.
