25th fatality -
Evergreen woman killed in wreck

Glovenia Kirby Brown, 53, of Old 74 Highway, Evergreen, was killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle wreck in the Sidney community along U.S. 701 north of Tabor City, according to William Hannah, assistant coroner for Columbus County.

Hannah said the collision took place "about 7:15 a.m." at the intersection of U.S. 701 and Peacock Road. Brown was driving south on Peacock Road and pulled into the path of a work van traveling south on U.S. 701.

The victim was pinned in the wreckage and died at the scene. She is the 25th fatality of 2006, all of them in rural areas of the county.

Information from the Highway Patrol is not available Friday because of all troopers working roadblocks and other duties in the Riegelwood area of the county, hit by a deadly tornado 45 minutes before the fatal crash.
